Hello,

As part of a regular reminder to participants about how to manage their
subscription to CLICK4HP we are reposting some of the commands and "how
to's" frequently requested by participants. This is a revised version of
the March 10, 1997 posting on the same topic. Thanks to feedback from
some subscribers, I have made some changes to make it easier to
understand (a little 'plain language' helps!), and included some other
items on posting messages.
I suggest that you print this message and save it for future reference.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the
co-facilitators of CLICK4HP - Liz Rykert <[log in to unmask]> and Alison
Stirling <[log in to unmask]>

***How to Send a message to the list:***

To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the
list,
just send an e-mail message to: <[log in to unmask]>
This is called "sending mail to the list", because you send mail to
a single address and the LISTSERV sends a copy to all the people who are
subscribed (as of March 20 1997 that is 387 people all over the world.)

CLICK4HP uses a shared facilitation approach to animate and organize the
discussion online. It is *not* a moderated or edited list - participants
post messages without anyone screening them in advance. The subscribers
or members are the observers, participants and contributors to the
discussion. Alison, Liz and Sam, as list-owners and co-facilitators,
handle the administrative aspects of the list, such as error messages
and help with subscription options, and occasionally contribute
commentary and summaries for the list.

***Making changes to your subscription options***

Sending a command to the list address meant for messages will not work,
and probably irritate hundreds of people.
All commands must be sent to the "LISTSERV address" which is
<[log in to unmask]>
* Note that the e-mail address and the commands are not case sensitive -
we are putting the commands in capital letters here for ease of reading.

COMMANDS must go to: [log in to unmask]
MESSAGES must go to: [log in to unmask]

***To get one message a day with all the postings to the list instead of
multiple individual messages***

CLICK4HP is available in digest form. This means you get one message a
day with all the postings to the list instead of individual messages. If
you wish to receive the digested version of the postings,
send email to <[log in to unmask]> with the following command:
SET CLICK4HP DIGEST

***How to get a list of subscribers***

Please note that it is presently possible for anybody to determine that
you are signed up to the list through the use of the "REVIEW"
command, which returns the e-mail address and name of all the
subscribers.

To see the list of people subscribed to CLICK4HP:
send a command to <[log in to unmask]> and
type REVIEW CLICK 4HP

To make your name invisible as a subscriber to CLICK4HP:
send a command to <[log in to unmask]> and
type SET CLICK4HP CONCEAL

______________________________________________

***To leave the CLICK4HP list***

You may leave the list at any time by sending an e-mail to
<[log in to unmask]> with the command ;-(
SIGNOFF (or UNSUBSCRIBE) CLICK4HP

If you are going out of town and wish to postpone getting your messages
until your return, send an e-mail to <[log in to unmask]> with the
command
SET CLICK4HP NOMAIL
Later upon your return, send an e-mail command to <[log in to unmask]>
to
SET CLICK4HP MAIL which will start you receiving messages again.

***Getting archived CLICK4HP postings***

All postings are saved in archives. To retrieve a month of postings,
send a command to: <[log in to unmask]> and
type INDEX CLICK4HP
This will produce a list of monthly logs listing the log by year and
month (eg. LOG9605)

To retrieve a particular month of postings:
send command to <[log in to unmask]> and
type GET CLICK4HP LOG9609 (if you want the entire month of postings for
September 1996).
What you will receive is a huge text file of all of the messages in that
month.

***For more information on what else is accessible in a listserv***

Send a command to <[log in to unmask]> and in the body of the message
type the command:
INFO DATABASE
This is an interesting, if somewhat difficult to read, item with
valuable information on it - for example how to search for a specific
topic that may have appeared in CLICK4HP.

To get more information about other listserv commands:
send a command to <[log in to unmask]> and in the body of the message
type: INFO REFCARD

***When problems or long silences occur***

Remember that you can use REVIEW CLICK4HP to get the subscriber
list to see if you have been deleted following a long lull in CLICK4HP
postings to your mailbox. The rapid growth of use of the Internet is
showing up as more delays in delivering mail through electronic
gate-ways and to keep the work load manageable we will be deleting
people whose accounts reject mail for long periods of time.
Every day the list-owners receive many 'error messages', notices
of undeliverable mail and 'user unknown' or 'host/domain unknown'. We
try to sort through these messages and remove old accounts, and if we
have time, check with people about their subscriptions. Sometimes there
are accounts which send error messages even though the mail is getting
through. This has to do either with the network at your end, or some
particular gateway between here and there. If you are receiving CLICK4HP
and get a notice that one of us have UNSUBSCRIBED you - DO NOT TAKE
THIS AS A SIGN THAT THE THOUGHT POLICE ARE AT WORK. Just RESUBSCRIBE
with an e-mail message to <[log in to unmask]> and type the command
     SUBSCRIBE CLICK4HP first-name last-name

***It is important to know where to go for help!***

Send an e-mail to <[log in to unmask]>; or send us, Alison
<[log in to unmask]> or
Liz <[log in to unmask]> an email to find out what is going on.

There's also great information on being a list participant to be found
at the following Internet web sites:
http://lawlib.slu.edu/training/mailser.htm
http://www.nova.edu/Inter-Links/listserv.html

To find other lists of interest look at: Liszt - the really big
directory of e-mail lists, and their 'tips for newcomers' as well as
mailing list search forms and resources go to:
http://www.liszt.com/intro.html

Lastly, give some thought to the potential that e-mail lists like
CLICK4HP hold for your health promotion work, as an individual and as
part of an organization - for information sharing, research, dialogue
and working together with others. Let us know some of your thoughts on
this medium.

Cheers,

Alison Stirling <[log in to unmask]> or <[log in to unmask]>
