Post Title: Epidemiologist; Level: P.4; Post Number: .5774; Duty Station:
Port-au-Prince, Haiti; Tenure: Two years, first year probationary period;
Division/Program/Office: Special Program on Vaccines and Immunization
(SVI).

Basic Salary: $48,019 at single rate; $51,597 with primary dependents (per
annum net of taxes). Post Adjustment: $11, 861 at single rate; $12,744 with
primary dependents (per annum net of taxes).
Hardship/Mobility: $10,724 at single rate; $14,300 with primary dependents
(per annum net of taxes).

Minimum Requirements:
Education: A university degree in a health related profession and a
Master's degree in epidemiology or public health.  An M.D. or a
postgraduate degree in a health related profession would be an asset.
Experience at the national level: Seven years of experience with managerial
responsibilities for disease control programs, with emphasis in the design,
implementation and evaluation of immunization programs.
Experience at the international level: Two years of participation in
technical cooperation programs and activities in disease control or in
immunization programs in an international health related program or
institution.
Languages:  Very good knowledge of French and Spanish with a working
knowledge of English.

Canadian Government appoints new president to IDRC
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Lloyd Axworthy, announced
on April 17 the appointment of Maureen O'Neil to the Presidency of the
International Development Research Centre (IDRC) effective immediately.

Ms. O'Neil was the unanimous choice of the Board of Governors.
Ms. O'Neil is currently Chair of the International Centre for Human Rights
and Democratic Development and served until recently as interim President
for the organization. A graduate in sociology from Carleton University Ms.
O'Neil has spent a good part of her professional life in the areas of
public policy, research, policy analysis, and development. She served as
President of the North South Institute from 1989 to 1995; Deputy Minister
of the Ministry of Citizenship of Ontario from 1987 to 1989; Secretary
General of the Canadian Human Rights Commission from 1986 to 1987, and
coordinator of the Status of Women Canada from 1978 to 1986. She also
served as Chair of the Board of Governors of Carleton University from 1993
to 1995. Ms. O'Neil's mandate will be for three years.

New Canadian NGO seeks executive director
---------------------------------------------------------------------
A Planning Committee is launching a new Canadian NGO mandated to promote
and support the Programme of Action of the International Conference on
Population and Development (ICPD, Cairo, 1994). The goal of Action Canada
for Population and Development (ACDP) would be to provide Canadians with
information, education and opportunities for discussion and research about
population and development issues.

The planning committee is seeking an executive director for this new NGO.
Although based in Ottawa, the position involves significant travel. Salary
range: $50,000-$60,000 plus benefits. For further details, see the FCD

Trillium Foundation announces new award

The Trillium Foundation is pleased to announce its first annual Caring
Communities Award. The award seeks to locate and celebrate those
communities that shine light on the future, a future where people feel a
sense of belonging and responsibility to each other, and are active
participants in their own destinies. The foundation is seeking candidates
and applications from groups across Ontario, including schools, businesses,
healthcare providers, volunteer organizations, local government and

Boston University offers program on Financing Health Care in Developing
Countries

The Boston University School of Public Health announces the eleventh annual
Financing Health Care in Developing Countries Program, to be held September
18 - December 12, 1997. This intensive twelve-week program applies economic
and financial-management principles to the public and private health sec
