AVSC seeks Country Program Advisor, Ukraine
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Access to Voluntary and Safe Contraception (AVSC) is seeking a Country Program Advisor to assist the Program Manager to develop and manage programs in Ukraine. The position is based in Kiev, Ukraine. Qualifications: graduate degree in public health or related field with a minimum of five years relevant work experience; knowledge of family planning programs; management experience; work experience in the former Soviet Union; willingness to travel 25-30% of the time; and strong writing and verbal communication skills in English and Ukrainian (and/or Russian).

Specific duties include: contributing to country strategies and preparation of documents for country plans, budgets and project proposals; maintaining up-to-date country background information (e.g., DHS surveys, health infrastructure, services, statistics and training information, contraceptive practices and trends, donor and sister agency involvement); translating documents as necessary (Russian/Ukrainian/English); participating in needs assessments, project evaluations and special technical assistance; assisting with maintaining Russian/Ukrainian and or English communications; supervising local staff and orienting new field staff; monitoring and evaluating subprojects and assisting with grant management functions; assisting with inter-divisional and consulting input into programs; arranging consultancies, including drafting SOW, overseeing logistical arrangements and preparing briefing materials.

The British Council offers international seminars for nurses

The British Council is offering two international seminars in London, England for nurses.  The first, entitled "Nursing Care of People with HIV Disease", will be held from September 7-20, 1997. The seminar provides the theoretical foundation for the development of the clinical practice skills required by nurses in the field of HIV care. The second, entitled "Tuberculosis: The Role of the Nurse in Prevention, Control and Care", will be held from September 21-27. It offers senior nurses an opportunity to refresh their clinical and professional knowledge in relation to tuberculosis.

Cuba hosts conference on Indigenous Legacies of the Caribbean
-------------------------------------------------------------
An interdisciplinary conference and intensive field study on Indigenous Legacies of the Caribbean will be held from November 16-23, 1997 in Baraco, Cuba. This international encounter will explore and celebrate the legacy of indigenous peoples of the Caribbean. Participants will examine elements of indigenous culture and history through conferences, professional exchanges, workshops and field observations. The conference also features an historic opportunity for a gathering of Taino culture from the eastern region of Cuba as well as Puerto Rico and the North American diaspora.
