Subject: Sanctions and Genocide in Iraq
Sanctions and Genocide in Iraq:
The Silent War Against the People of Iraq
Science for Peace, Women's International League for Peace and Freedom,
Physicians for Aid and Relief and the
University of Toronto International Health Program are proud to host a
lecture and discussion concerning the
genocidal effects of sanctions on the Iraqi people.
This past spring, Linda Morgan and Irene MacInnes travelled with
Physicians for Social Responsibility to Iraq to document the
effects of the U.N. sanctions on the health care system and the people
of Iraq.
Over the last 9 years, over 500,000 children have died of preventable
diseases. Madame Albright, Secretary of State in the U.S.,
when asked what she thought of this toll replied that "It was worth the
price." Every day, 200
children die for lack of food, safe water and medicines due to the
strict sanctions enforced by the United States and Britain. These
sanctions include pencils, chlorine for water purification, electrical
equipment to run
hospitals and refrigeration of food and medicines.
A recent UNICEF Report stated: "The balance sheet of several years of
sanctions against Iraq reveals a minimum of political
dividends as against a high human price paid primarily by women and
children. The food rationing system
provides less than 60 per cent of the required daily calorie intake, the
water and sanitation systems are in a state of collapse, and
there is a critical shortage of life-saving drugs."
It will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 17th in room 2-211 at OISE
(252 Bloor Street West). Linda and Irene will discuss
their visit showing slides and video of Iraq. We will also discuss
strategies to call on the end of
these crushing sanctions which are killing and entire generation of
Iraqi people.
All are welcome. Admission is free. Your attendance would be greatly
appreciated. For further information, please contact Paul
(978-8741; [log in to unmask]) or Colleen
(535-6586;[log in to unmask])
Please bring a small doll to represent those who have died in Iraq
to be presented to the Canadian
Government in Ottawa during Linda and
Irene's tour of Canada.

14 October 1999 Dear Paul: This is just a reminder to say that we are
looking forward to receiving information on the "talk". Please
forward it to me and I will ensure that it is passed on to our
Administration for distribution. Thanks Diane. Diane Meredith

Not until the creation and maintenance of decent conditions of life for
all
people are recognized and accepted as a common obligation of all people
and all
countries - not until then shall we, with a certain degree of
justification, be
able to speak of humankind as civilized. --Albert Einstein, 1945.
