COMMUNICATIONS/MEDIA DEVELOPMENT

INNOVATIVE SMOKING CESSATION PROJECT FOR THE LGBT COMMUNITY

Project Background:



Toronto Public Health is beginning a comprehensive pilot project to reduce tobacco-related morbidity and mortality for people in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) communities in Toronto.  This project includes:

-Development and pilot testing of an evidence-based intervention
-Increasing the capacity of agencies & people providing services to the community to provide smoking cessation/reduction support to their clients

-A small-scale communications and social marketing campaign.

 

Request for Consulting Services:

 

This project has been developed as a collaborative effort of agencies that serve the LGBT communities and agencies that have expertise in smoking cessation interventions. The partnership is called the Rainbow Tobacco Intervention Project (RTIP).

 

To date, RTIP has conducted a search and review of relevant literature & programs and identified recommended practices in smoking cessation/reduction interventions for this population. RTIP recently received funding to carry out a pilot project this fall. There are plans to continue the project throughout 2006. A draft logic model and work plans have been developed. 

 

The project seeks an experienced communications consultant to undertake the following tasks:

  a.. Development of cost-effective marketing strategies tailored specifically to LGBT communities in Toronto. The focus will be a) to promote the cessation group and b) to increase awareness of the issues within the community and with service-providers. 
  b.. Development of promotional materials for the smoking cessation/reduction intervention.
 

Materials will need to meet the approval of the RTIP coalition as well as the Communications and Information Branch of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

The consultant must have demonstrated knowledge, skills and experience in the development of cost-effective health communications campaigns  

 

Additional qualifications that would be an asset include:

¨      Knowledge of tobacco-related issues

¨      Knowledge of health promotion

¨      Experience in developing communications strategies for the LGBT community.

 

A maximum of $7,500 has been allocated to this Request for Proposals.
