Canadian Council for Tobacco Control(CCTC) Requests Assistance From the
Health Community
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The federal cabinet, under pressure from the Prime Minister's office, is on
the verge of deciding to seriously weaken the Tobacco Act, exempting
international auto racing from the Act's sponsorship advertising
restrictions. This amendment would be a disaster for public health. The
CCTC is asking people to voice their opposition by faxing the Prime Minister
at (613) 941-6900. If possible, copy the letter to the Member of
Parliament, and the Minister of Health (fax (613) 952-1154 before the end of
November. The CCTC may be contacted at 170 Laurier Ave. W., Suite 1000,
Ottawa, ON K1P 5V5 Fax: (613) 567-2730.

International Symposium on Ageing of the World Population: Health and
Socio-Economic Issues for the 21 Century in Kobe, Japan
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
To be held November 10-14, 1998, the symposium aims to utilize data from
both developed and developing countries, indicating the overall implications
of ageing population; to anticipate the future development of the ageing
society as well as the changing needs of the elderly in the coming
millennium; and to make recommendations and guidelines for meeting
challenges brought by global ageing population in the twenty-first century,
for use of UN/WHO and its member countries. Since the year 1999 is dedicated
by the United Nations to the older citizens of the world, a world Summit for
Older Persons is planned to be held. The outcome of the proposed symposium
will constitute an important input to WHO's contribution to the UN
International Year of Older Persons. Further information: WHO Centre for
