Nutrition, Health, and Child Development - A New
Resource from the Pan American Health Organization
(PAHO)
--------------------------------------------------------
PAHO has just published "Nutrition, Health, and Child
Development: Research Advances and Policy
Recommendations." Developed in partnership with the
University of the West Indies' Tropical Metabolism
Research Unit (TMRU), and with the collaboration of the
World Bank, this book emphasizes an integrated approach
to child development that considers how its building
blocks - health, nutrition, and psychosocial stimulation
- interact with one another.

This publication examines how and to what extent
nutrition, health, and stimulation programs can affect
children's cognitive and social developments and their
ability to learn in school. By examining recent
research, the authors - all leading professionals
working at the cutting edge of nutrition research -
explore such topics as undernutrition, iron and iodine
deficiencies, neonatal feeding, short-term food
deprivation, parasitic infections, and psychosocial
deprivation. They also review results from early
childhood interventions, including nutritional
supplementation and psychological stimulation, as well
as interventions in later childhood, including school
feeding and deworming programs.

WHO Announces the International Healthy Cities
Conference
--------------------------------------------------------
To be held in Athens, Greece, 20-23 June 1998 marking a
decade of Healthy Cities action. The Athens conference
aims to present a coherent perspective on healthy city
developments in the past, present and future. Exchanges
during the conference between members of the technical,
activist, political and scientific sectors will
celebrate ten years of the WHO Healthy Cities project
and the global movement, as well as steer the project
into the future.

This conference is a special occasion to: mark and
celebrate ten years of the WHO Healthy Cities project
and the growth of the Healthy Cities movement throughout
Europe and the world; debate and learn from the
evaluation results and vast experience of cities, towns,
municipalities and communities which have been a part
of the European and global Healthy Cities movement;
formulate strategies and plans reflecting the new WHO
health for all for the 21st century policy and the
imperatives to implement Local Agenda 21; and boost
political commitment and appreciation at local,
regional, national and international levels for healthy
urban development in the next century.
