CIET is an international group of NGOs, institutes, charities, foundations
and trusts that is dedicated to building the community voice into planning.
It began in Mexico in 1985. CIET methods, which have been implemented in
42 countries to date, combine modern epidemiology with participatory and
communication tools.
CIETcanada was formed in 1994, and has been involved in numerous projects
in Canada, most of them with Aboriginal communities, and international
projects with support from the World Bank, CIDA and IDRC.
Health Canada has asked CIET to adapt its cross-design quantitative and
qualitative methods to local public health planning in Canada. The pilot
project, called LoPHID (local public health infrastructure development)
will include five public health regions in the Atlantic provinces; it
begins 1 April and lasts for two years. The initiative allows for five CIET
interns, who will be trained in the course of the project.
CIET interns typically have high levels of academic qualification and
substantial work experience. Interns are recruited from a wide range of
disciplines, important characteristics being an ability to work hard in a
team, and a commitment to build the community voice into planning. LoPHID
interns will be expected to spend most of the next 18 months in one of
Canada's Atlantic provinces and 4-6 months in one of CIETs international
projects. The stipend is $36,000 per year. =
