IUHPE XVI World Conference, Pre-Conference Workshop
June 18-20, 1998--San Juan, Puerto Rico

Developing Health Promotion and Education Initiatives in Reproductive Health:
A Framework for Action Planning

An exciting three-day workshop will be offered, from June 18-20 June, in San
Juan, Puerto Rico to introduce an innovative participatory and
action-oriented approach to planning and implementing health promotion and
education initiatives in reproductive health.

Based on the premise that advocates for reproductive health initiatives can
use an action-planning process to induce collaboration among policy makers
and programme managers; health and education services personnel; and
consumers and their families, peers, and related community organisations,
the Framework for Action Planning was developed by Marilyn Rice of the
Reproductive Health Technical Support Division of WHO.

During this workshop to be held just prior to the IUHPE XVI World
Conference, participants will be introduced to this action-oriented planning
process and will develop specific behavioural and educational objectives
relevant to their work settings. Discussions will include how needs and
priorities are currently set in each participant's work settings, and how
this process could be made more participatory.

Through individual work, small and plenary group discussions, presentations,
role plays and other simulation exercises, participants will discuss and
apply action planning in identifying specific activities, partners,
resources and benchmarks related to achieving the objectives they have set.
Attention will be given to principles of building and maintaining
partnerships to help facilitate the development and reinforcement of
collaborative efforts back home.

Workshop facilitators are professionals from around the world who have
already had the experience of applying the Framework for Action Planning in
different settings, such as through formal health services, community-based
programmes, NGOs and universities.

Following the workshop, you will have the opportunity to join an
international network and electronic discussion list for maintaining ongoing
communication and support in the application of the Framework. In this way,
the workshop will provide you with the opportunity to become a part of a
dynamic goup that, through its ongoing sharing of information and
experiences, is contributing to lessons learned in the field.

Language: The workshop will be held in English and Spanish.
