Hi there,
this is my first posting to this list.
Some time ago I've read on paper a very entertaining essay, written
by Mark Twain. It is about his experiences, when he was learning German.
Unfortunately at that time, I did not write down the exact source of
the text. Now I can't find it again.
Could someone of this group help me. Where does the text stems from? Is
it available somewhere on the internet?
Volker
Richard H. Cracroft, BYU, responds: I believe you are looking for
"The Awful German Language," which is Appendix D of Twain's >A Tramp
Abroad.< You might enjoy my superlative and, well, simply wonderful
essay thereon, "'Exactly the German Way': Mark Twain's Comic
Strategies with 'The Awful German Language,'" in Thalia, XIII:1,2
(1993).
