DBI is very excited to announce that after much work from all corners of the
Publications Program and other PAHO offices, i.e. ABF, the PAHO Publications
site has been revamped, moved, and is now offering electronic commerce
online.

With the new catalog, PAHO, as do many first-rate businesses but no other
international organization--including WHO, the IMF and the World Bank--now
has a shopping cart feature and the ability to order publications online
utilizing credit cards in a secure environment.

Hospital Mitigation

Hospitals, created by PAHO's Emergency Preparedness Program in South
America.

This site contains various information on disaster mitigation including
guidelines, training materials, selected bibliography as well as
publications available through PAHO.

New Publication on Rural Drinking Water Systems
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Drinking water systems are lifeline services, and in the aftermath of
disasters, they become even more critical.  Rural drinking water systems
differ from their urban counterparts, and are the focus of new a publication
from PAHO/WHO entitled "Manual para la mitigacion de desastres naturales en
sistemas rurales de agua potable."  It describes not only the particular
characteristics of rural drinking water systems but also offers examples of
how to apply a methodology to determine their vulnerability.

This publication has been written especially for technical and
administrative personnel who are in charge of drinking water systems.  A
limited number of copies (in Spanish only) are available to institutions and
professionals working in the field.  Request copies by e-mail from PAHO at

Programa de Pasantias para los Jovenes en Salud Internacional

Dentro del marco de la Estrategia de Empleo para los Jovenes, la Sociedad
Canadiense para la Salud Internacional, (SCSI), ofrece pasantias en Salud
Internacional para los jovenes recientemente graduados que planeen una
carrera en salud. El Departamento de Asuntos Extranjeros y de Comercio
Internacional (DAECI) y la Agencia Canadiense de Desarrollo Internacional
(ACDI), proveen los fondos para ello.

Si usted tiene ciudadania canadiense y una formacion academica en medicina,
biologia, ciencias sociales, administracion de la salud, odontologia,
economia de la salud, enfermeria u otra disciplina relacionada con la salud,
comuniquese con nosotros.  La seleccion de  candidatos se llevara a cabo de
julio al 30 de septiembre de 1998.
