Received from colleagues in the Toronto area who are active in Diversity and
Equity issues - exciting news about a conference planned for autumn 2004 (no
specific date set yet), and a 3 month contract job for a coordinator.

Project Coordinator



Position/Role Description:

A number of community based organizations, health centers, hospitals and
individuals are in the process of planning for a conference in Toronto on
Health Equity and Diversity. This position will support that process.
(Please see below for conference background information).

Reporting through the Operational Working Group to the full conference
organizing committee, the Project Coordinator will be part of a
collaborative, inclusive effort. The successful candidate will work with the
team to facilitate the implementation of the full vision of the conference.

The Project Coordinator will support the development of appropriate
conference strategies and initiatives by:
*       Coordinating logistical requirements for the conference
*       Cultivating and maintaining working relationships with funders and
all relevant conference stakeholders.
*       Identifying and actively pursuing various resource opportunities
*       Developing strategies to ensure the expanded involvement of
stakeholders and support for both the conference itself as well as its
intended conference outcomes and follow-up initiatives.
*       Engaging in conference program research and planning,
*       Developing and implement a conference communications and promotional
strategy
*       Liaising with and supporting the various conference planning
sub-committees to ensure consistency.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess a degree in a relevant discipline
combined with at least 3 years of related experience; or possess an
equivalent combination of prior work experience and educational background.
The candidate will also possess excellent proposal and report writing
skills, analytical, communication and project management abilities as well
as a proven research capability.

The ideal candidate will have sound understanding and commitment to health
equity and diversity - including its global dimensions_ as well as work
experience in areas such as health promotion and illness prevention, group
facilitation, program evaluation and/or project management.

NOTE: This is a 3-month contract with the possibility for extension

Conference Goal and Objectives


Goal
        *       To highlight critical health issues and their impact on
diverse communities in Toronto in order to stimulate public debate, build
awareness, influence policies and health practices and support innovative
partnerships, thereby reducing health disparity and increasing access and
equity for diverse communities on all levels of service and government
Objectives

        1.      To provide an opportunity for community stakeholders (family
members, clients, patients, community-based agencies, healers,
consumers/survivors etc.), researchers, educators, advocates and health
practitioners to share best practices, develop links and connections and to
build and enhance partnerships;

        2.      To gather and share information/knowledge on the global
dimensions of health and diversity in order to demonstrate and understand
the interconnectedness of local and global health issues and strategies
which contribute to improving health outcomes of Toronto's diverse
population.

        3.      To specifically address issues of oppression,
marginalization, inequity and discrimination in the health care sector,
including the dismantling of equity initiatives and to develop collective
worldviews and strategies to reduce health disparities

        4.      To demonstrate committed local, regional, national and
international leadership on social justice, diversity, equity and health and
engaging diverse communities, politicians and academics in this process

        5.      To advance the public policy agenda in relations to urban
health and diversity by addressing issues such as homelessness, violence,
and unemployment and to influence city, provincial and federal planning and
agendas.

        6.      To promote health equity, best practices, innovation,
collaboration, and respectful partnerships as important parts of the health
landscape with respect to diverse /marginalized communities in order to
build sustaining networks, strategies and links amongst allies in the field

        7.      To generally advance the social justice and equity agenda in
the City of Toronto and beyond by identifying and elaborating upon best
practices and policies of inclusion and service delivery to diverse and
marginal populations by developing appropriate action plans and
recommendations.
