I wish to recommend an essay published recently in Lancet:

Beaglehole R, Bonita R.  "Public Health at the Crossroads:
Which Way Forward?"  Lancet 1998 (Feb 21); 351: 590-592.

The perspective will probably not be foreign to most readers
of this list, but the views are eloquently and forcefully stated,
and so perhaps of potential interest nonetheless.

One quote:

in the political process, an arena which is not emphasized
in current training; the intersection between public health and
democracy demands exploration." (p. 591)
