New Publications

1. Poverty and Health-CPHI Collected Papers
CPHI is pleased to announce the release of three reports on the theme of
poverty and health. This collection consists of two working papers by Drs.
Shelley Phipps and David P. Ross. Shelley Phipps' paper scans the research
literature on the relationship between poverty and health. David P. Ross
reviews policy approaches that address this relationship. A third paper
reports on proceedings of a national roundtable on poverty and health hosted
by CPHI in the spring of 2002. Areas of agreement and disagreement regarding
the relationship between poverty and health are identified.

The papers are:
· "The Impact of Poverty on Health" by Shelley Phipps
· "Policy Approaches to Address the Impact of Poverty on Health" by David P.
Ross
· "Poverty and Health: Links to Action" - Proceedings of the CPHI National
Roundtable on Poverty and Health, March 26, 2002

You can download the papers from CPHI's Web site at www.cihi.ca following

2. Children and Youth Health-CPHI Atlantic Regional Workshop
This report documents the proceedings of a CPHI-sponsored Atlantic Canada
workshop on child and youth health. The workshop, held in Fredericton in
February 2003, consisted of approximately 30 researchers and decision-makers
from the Atlantic region working in the area of child and youth health. The
goals of this regional workshop were to review CPHI-funded research on child
and youth health issues in the Atlantic region and identify policy
significance; to identify the research needs of policy makers, to inform
future population health research; and to promote linkages and exchange
among CPHI funded researchers, other population health researchers and
policy makers in the Atlantic region.

Reports.

workshop on the determinants of healthy communities. The workshop, held in
Saskatoon in March 2003, consisted of approximately 35 researchers and
decision-makers from the Prairie provinces working in the area of community
health issues. The goals of this workshop were threefold: to review
CPHI-funded research on community and health issues in the Prairie region
and identify policy significance; to identify the research needs of policy
makers to inform future population health research; and to promote linkages
and exchange among CPHI funded researchers, other population health
researchers and policy makers in the region.

4. Place and Health-CPHI Research Workshop Report
This report documents issues arising from a CPHI sponsored pan-Canadian
research workshop, consisting of seven research teams funded by CPHI in the
area of "Place and Health" (urban and rural). Approximately 30 researchers
attended the meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to establish a network
of researchers interested in discussing challenges and methods related to
research dealing with the relationship between local environments and
health, to exchange information and ideas about the problems of dividing up
metropolitan areas into local units and to exploring the range of existing
databases available for studying place and health in metropolitan and
non-metropolitan areas.

women's health issues. Health Canada also provided funding for this project.
The final report, titled "Women's Health Surveillance Report, A
Multidimensional Look at the Health of Canadian Women," (WHSR), is the first
national surveillance report on women's health issues in Canada. The WHSR
consists of 31 chapters, 28 of which are on specific health
issues/conditions (e.g., diabetes, breast cancer, eating disorders, etc.).
The report was authored by the Project's core research team, (consisting of
Health Canada staff and academic investigators) as well as leading experts
in women's health issues across the country.

A summary report as well as the full technical report will be available on
CIHI's website www.cihi.ca as well as on Health Canada's website
