Irv Rootman asked about cancer prevention initiatives supported by local boards of health:

The Brant County Health Unit has a number of initiatives in this area.
1.  Our Heart Health program has coupled with Cancer Prevention
2.  We have a PHN who participates in a Cervical Screening Committee with our local hospital.  Part of the mandate is to develop outreach tools for community education.  They have also developed a kit (with the hospital and Six Nations) on the topic and will train the trainer for its use.
3.  This PHN also chairs a joint Breast/Cervical Health committee which is working on a number of education pieces for the fall.
4.  We have a Sunsense workshop which is very popular with community groups and workplaces.
5. We have a very well developed relationship with the Brant County Unit of the Canadian Cancer society.
6.  Our Tobacco Use Prevention team has done a lot of work regarding by-laws for the City  and  a big awareness campaign regarding the health effects of second hand smoke.  The awareness campaign involved a number of health units including Hamilton Wentworth, Niagara and Halton, I believe, and there may be others.
