The Social Support Research Program at the University of Alberta is now on
the web! Visit us at www.chps.ualberta.ca/ssrp.

A renewed interest in health promotion and population health reinforces the
role of social support in maintaining the health of Albertans. Research
undertaken by Dr. Miriam Stewart in the Social Support Research Program of
the Centre for Health Promotion Studies at the University of Alberta
addresses social support as an important determinant of health in a variety
of populations and contexts. Ongoing research projects include support of
family caregivers of seniors with chronic conditions, low-income consumers
access to community health services, online support needs of teens with
disabilities, social support among immigrants and refugees, social isolation
and exclusion among low-income populations, and improving mental health of
children born to adolescent mothers. Assessment, intervention, and
evaluation projects should yield insights into programs, services, and
policies which enhance accessibility, foster behaviour changes, and promote
social integration and community participation.
