with regard to all the discussion about "bureaucracy" and the tension
between being a "community" person within a "hierarchical" workplace I
suggest the following resources:
"Leadership and the New Science: Learning About Organization from an
Orderly Universe" by Margaret Whitely ... she explores the evolving
paradigms in biology, chemistry, and physics as metaphors for complex,
dynamic, learning organizations ... I think it is a great book with
profound implications for transformational work ... think, for example,
about the implication of "shared vision / shared values" as a cultural
energy field that contrains the probability of behaviors within such a
"field" ...
"The Healthy Company: Eight Strategies to Develop People, Productivity,
and Profits" by Robert Rosen / Lisa Berger ... this book takes an
"organismic" view of companies with a view toward "wholeness" ... its a
bit more linear in its presciptive appraoch than Wheatley's treatise,
but provactive all the same... echo's the thesis of John Gardner (former
Secretary of the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare &
founder of Common Cause) that the essential enabler of quality in
organizations is the presence of the characteristics of community;
non-communities concistently fail.
