Professional Development Award (Research Associate)
International Tobacco Initiative (ITI)/International Development Centre
(IDRC)

The International Tobacco Initiative (ITI), an international Secretariat
housed at the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) seeks
applications from qualified graduates for a Professional Development
Award beginning September, 1998.

The International Tobacco Initiative, created in 1994 and funded by
IDRC, Health Canada, and the Swedish International Development Agency
(Sida), was established to assure the existence of a strong research,
funding, analysis, and knowledge base for the development of effective
public tobacco control policies in the South.

The Research Associate will assist the Executive Director in the
dissemination of information and documentation in support of the various
studies, and reports; undertake research tasks to locate, review and
synthesize scientific and technical material; prepare state of the art
reviews on research and development issues; undertake searches of IDRC's
and other data bases and perform basic statistical analyses; prepare
correspondence and write and edit material, including the preparation of
graphic material at the request of the Executive Director; liaise with
other parts of the Centre and  follow-up as required; assist in the
organisation of meetings, arrangements for visitors and the preparation
of minutes and short reports.

Applicants should possess at least a master's degree in health or
related social sciences (for instance, economics) with one to three
years of work experience in the area of public health and/or related
areas. Familiarity with IDRC's procedures and working experience in
developing countries is preferred but not essential. The position
requires fluency in English with excellent writing skills. Knowledge of
French and another language will be preferred. Applicants should have a
good understanding of, and interest in, developing countries and
research for development.

The duration of the award is one year and renewable at the Centre's
discretion for another year. Stipend is in the range of $1,500 to $3,500
per month, depending on academic qualifications and experience.

career orientation and how the award would contribute to his/her carrier
development (two pages), proof of citizenship/permanent residency, two
reference letters and academic transcripts by August 14, 1998 to:

Selection of the successful awardees will be made by a committee of the
International Development Research Centre.

All supporting documentation must be received by the deadline before the
application will be considered.

Candidates cannot receive any other government scholarship, award,
subsidy bursary, honorarium or hold any federal government contract in
support of same research/work project for the duration of the award.
