Ontario lives in poverty. We deserve better: it's time for a raise! Across
the province, people are joining the Living Wage - Living Income campaign to
demand raises to the minimum wage and social assistance rates.

This campaign kit is designed to help local activists get involved in the
campaign. All documents are in Adobe PDF Format except for the poster, which
is in Rich Text Format (may be opened with most word processors). These
documents are provided for print-out and distribution. If for any reason you

Over 75 prominent economists endorse raising the minimum wage

In the midst of the provincial election, over 75 economists and labour
policy experts have publicly endorsed a higher provincial minimum wage and
improved income security.  The broad list of endorsers includes experts from
the academic, social policy, business and labour communities.  They reject
the Conservative claim that a higher minimum wage would destroy jobs.

In conjunction with the Ontario Needs a Raise Coalition, the list of
endorsers will be released at a press conference tomorrow.

The Ontario Needs a Raise Coalition is a broad group including legal
clinics, anti-poverty, labour, community, low-wage workers, students and
women's groups. Concerned that nearly 2 million people in Ontario are living
below the poverty line, the coalition came together to demand that the
minimum wage and social assistance rates be raised.

At a media conference on Wednesday September 10th, three of the economists
who have signed the appeal will speak briefly about why a higher minimum
wage would benefit Ontario's economy and labour market.

Additionally, in communities across Ontario activists will be holding
various events to pressure political candidates to commit to increasing the
minimum wage and social assistance rates. Participating communities include:
Toronto, Cobourg, Peterborough, London, Sault Ste. Marie, North Bay,
Windsor, Kitchener, Hamilton, Owen Sound, Mississauga, Kingston, Kenora,
Oshawa, Cornwall, Red Lake and Halton/Burlington.
