We are looking for an epidemiologist for Kenya. See below for details, and
contact person.

MSF program in Nyanza province, Kenya
Role of the epidemiologist

1. Summary of the program

M=E9decins Sans Fronti=E8res has a program to support malaria preparednes=
s and give assistance during the malaria outbreak which usually starts on May.
The general objective of this program is to prevent malaria mortality in this
area. The first part of the program consists in supplying health facilities of
Gusha and Kisii districts (Nyanza province, Kenya) with drugs, and training of
personnel in malaria case management. The second part of the program consists in
running a malaria program in Kenyenya division, an area of 93,000 inhabitants.
In most of the area, mobile teams will diagnose (rapid tests) and
treat(Fansidar+Artesunate) patients as early as possible when the high
transmission season starts. A smaller area of 12,000 people has been also
selected, where a second strategy will be implemented: screening of all the
population and treatment of positive (rapid tests) with the same treatment. In
both areas, gametocytes rates will be measured at the beginning and at the end of
the high transmission season in two samples of about 200 people.

2. Role of epidemiologist

He/she will work in relation with the whole MSF program and under the
responsibility of the MSF Medical Co-ordinator. He/she will be part of the MSF

good basic knowledge in epidemiology).

2. With some experience in developing countries, and willing to work with an
humanitarian association such as MSF.

3. Perform regular prevalence studies to follow the trends of malaria infection
in the two areas. The first prevalence study has already been performed. Surveys
are planned at 4 weeks interval.

4. Collect, enter, analyse and summarise data on malaria mortality and
morbidity. This will be done at different levels: health facilities, mobile
teams and screening teams.

5. Study Ppv and Npv of clinical malaria diagnosis at the health
centre/dispensary level, and of the thick blood smear at the hospital level. The
"gold standard" will be the rapid test.

6. Be in charge of measuring compliance to the combination therapy.

6. A Falciparum resistance study is also planned in a sample of about 100
people. He/she will be responsible for this study.
