I'm a graduate student doing a master's degree in nutrition at Laval
University in Quebec city. The main focus of my work is food insecurity. I
was therefore greatly interested by the new measures announced on the 15th
of June 2001 by Quebec's premiere Bernard Landry aimed at intensifying the
fight against poverty:

* $ 100 000 000 from the social solidarity reserve set aside for food and
lodging
* $ 21 000 000 over 3 years to improve the diet of children in Quebec's most
deprived schools
* $ 3 800 000 given to the "Club des petits déjeûners du Québec? to extend
and increase their efforts in 100 additional schools - meaning that 10 000
more children will be able to start the day with a complete breakfast.
* $ 10 000 000 from the Health and Social Services Network donated for a
regionally managed food security program that will support interventions
like: community cooking, buyers groups, community gardens, etc.

Furthermore, Jean Rochon recently initiated a campaign to mobilize Quebecers
to develop a provincial strategy to fight poverty. He proposed seven new
strategies aimed at combating poverty in a document available at
www.mess.gouv.qc.ca. Targeted groups were called upon to read and react to
this document and to communicate their own regional concerns to be addressed
directly by the government's new national strategy against poverty.

What do you think about these novel government intentions; will it really
help reduce poverty in Quebec? Have you recently encountered any web site(s)
where people are expressing their opinions about these recent anti-poverty
measures?

Thank you for your time :)
