ANNOUNCING
Growing Healthy Canadians:
An Online Guide for Positive Child Development
WHAT:
This Guide offers not only a rich source of information,
but also a unique perspective on how best to promote
the well-being of young people. This perspective has
six important features:
A Focus On All Children
A Focus On Successful Developmental Transitions
A Focus On Positive Outcomes
A Focus On Important Influences
A Focus On Multiple Contributors
A Focus On Effective Strategies
WHY:
The guide was created to promote and illustrate a simple
idea: that the healthy development of children and youth
is a shared responsibility. There has been much debate
about who should be doing what in order to grow healthy
children. The truth is, everyone has important
contributions to make in ensuring that young people
grow up in the kinds of conditions they require to thrive.
At the same time, no one type of contributor in society
- not families, communities, workplaces, nor
governments - can successfully raise the next generation
on their own.
FOR WHO:
The audience for this Guide includes anyone interested in
contributing to the well-being of children and youth.
Families, communities, organizations, groups, schools,
businesses and governments all have a role to play in
helping to promote healthy children and youth. This
Guide can also help others, such as funders, by giving
them an overview of what we know about what works,
and therefore what is worth investing in.
BY WHO:
This Resource Guide is the result of a unique collaboration
between an alliance of child advocates - the Sparrow Lake
Alliance (http://www.sparrowlake.org) and an alliance of
funders - the Funders Alliance for Children, Youth and
Families (http://www.fundersalliance.org). The Guide and
its accompanying print materials were researched and
produced by The Alder Group Inc.(http://alder.web.net).
