Workshop #2 on Spirituality and Mental Health Promotion

John Raeburn, PhD

Croft Chapter House, University College
15 Kings College Circle, University of Toronto

Friday 11 June, 1999
9.30 am - 4.00 pm

This is the second of two workshops on spirituality and mental health
promotion by John Raeburn, who is currently in Canada on study leave from
the University of Auckland, New Zealand. The first workshop looked broadly
at concepts of spirituality and mental health promotion, and explored how
the two were linked, in both general and practical terms. This workshop is
for those who are interested in learning how to apply these principles on a
personal level. This approach is based on a theory called 'Basic Sanity',
and a meditation-type practice called 'Attention Training' or the 'STET
Method'. Here, the aim is to develop a way of 'being' that is profound, and
which is geared towards a mentally healthy way of dealing with life, as well
as providing a 'taste' of one's 'inherent spirituality'. (John is currently
writing a book called 'Basic Sanity').

This workshop is open both to those who attended the first workshop, plus
anyone else who is interested. It is equally applicable to people who
already have a meditation or other practice and those who do not. All that
it requires is an openness to experience a new approach. At the very
least, you will have a pleasant, relaxed time!

John Raeburn is Associate-Professor of Behavioural Science in the Faulty of
Medicine and Health Science at the University of Auckland. He teaches
medical and graduate health science students, with topics including mental
health promotion and spirituality, areas in which he and students also do
research. He is co-author with Irving Rootman, Centre for Health Promotion,
of People-Centred Health Promotion. He has been Chair of the Mental Health
Foundation of New Zealand, and Chair of the Zen Society of New Zealand. He
has been a practitioner of Zen and other meditation methods for over 25
years.

There is no charge for this workshop. Morning and afternoon coffee will be
provided, but you will have to supply your own lunch. (There are eating
places nearby).

To register, please call Joanne Lacey, Centre for Health Promotion,
University of Toronto, 978-2182.

This workshop is organized by the Mental Health Promotion Interest Group,
Centre for Health Promotion
