PAHO's Catalogue of Disaster Publications and Information Resources is
now available on the Internet.  The catalogue contains a detailed
description of all PAHO disaster training materials (books, CD-ROMs,
slides and videos) and other sources of information, including the
Virtual Health Library for Disasters, SUMA, the Regional Disaster
Information Center (CRID) and the principal web sites with PAHO content.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: PAHO TO HONOUR PROMOTION OF TOBACCO-FREE SPORTS

"World No-Tobacco Day" 2002 (WNTD) will be held on May 31st. This year's
theme is Tobacco Free Sports.  The slogan is "Play it Clean".  As in
previous years, WNTD is an opportunity to recognize the efforts and
achievements of individuals and institutions working to reduce tobacco
use. The goal for 2002 is to draw attention to the incongruity of
tobacco's association with sport as well as the need to eliminate the
promotion of tobacco products through tobacco sponsorship of sports
figures, events, and facilities.  PAHO will recognize those individuals,
groups or institutions that have contributed significantly to the goal
of Tobacco Free Sports.  PAHO also wishes to recognize sports figures
and organizations that have contributed significantly to tobacco control
in general.  Four awards will be granted this year in the Region of the
Americas. Nominations must be received before April 7th. For more

REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS:  GORGAS MEMORIAL INSTITUTE RESEARCH AWARD

Applications for the Gorgas Memorial Institute Research Award are due by
August 1, 2002.  The award is issued in order to enhance and facilitate
the development of scientific linkages between Panama, nations of
Central America, tropical and sub-tropical South America and the
Caribbean Islands, and the United States.  The award supports short-term
travel for young research investigators from the regions for the
purposes of: (1) establishing collaborative biomedical research projects
focusing on tropical diseases of health importance to people living in
these areas, and (2) learning new techniques and approaches applicable

ESCALATION IN MIDDLE EASTERN CONFLICT RAISES MAJOR CONCERNS FOR HUMAN
HEALTH

Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, Director-General of the World Health
Organization has released a statement concerning the escalation of
violence in the Middle East.  The Director-General states that the
increasing violence represents "a new and serious threat to the health
of affected people - Palestinians, Israelis, and others caught up in the

WHO ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR JOURNALISM FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME

The World Health Organization is accepting applications for its
Journalism Fellowship Programme.  The Fellowship is composed of two
components meant to give reporters a broad and deep understanding of the
forces shaping global public health. First, WHO Fellows will attend
morning briefings on a range of international public health issues.
Then, during the remaining time, the fellows will have the freedom to
roam WHO, to attend lectures and seminars, to interview staff, and to
use WHO's extensive research resources to pursue their own special
interests.  Fellows may also spend an optional third week in the field.
Health and science reporters interested in learning more about WHO are
encouraged to apply.  The application deadline is April 30, 2002.  For

WHO RELEASES TOBACCO CONTROL REPORT

Litigation and public inquiries can be powerful tobacco control tools
according to a new report released by the World Health Organization
(WHO). Used properly, the law can help transform the paradigms of
tobacco control, awaken public outrage, strengthen public policies and
redress injuries. The WHO report analyses tobacco litigation as part of
global tobacco control efforts and its impact on public health.  Its
release is connected to the fourth round of negotiations on the proposed
Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, held in Geneva on March 18,
2002.   In the report, WHO suggests it is time to make the law, and
inquiries into the behaviour of tobacco transnationals, an integral
component of the comprehensive global tobacco control agenda in a way

WHO SEEKING APPLICANTS FOR RESEARCH ON CHAGAS DISEASE

The WHO is calling for applications for research grants to study Chagas
Disease.  As part of the WHO/TDR strategy for 2000-2005, Chagas disease
activities in the area of intervention development and implementation
research have been transferred from the Research Program of the World
Health Organization (WHO/TDR) to the Communicable Diseases Program of
the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/HCT).  PAHO/HCT is now
inviting applications for research in a number of areas.  The
applications must be received no later than May 31, 2002.  For areas of

HEALTH PROVIDES A MODEL FOR MORE EFFECTIVE DEVELOPMENT AID

The experience of bringing essential health interventions to the poorest
and most vulnerable people offers lessons for how development assistance
in other areas can be improved, Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland,
Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) stated in a
recent press release.  At the International Conference on Financing for
Development in Monterrey, WHO outlined key factors for making aid for
health work, such as setting quantifiable, time-based goals and linking
funding to performance. This approach can be adopted in areas as diverse
as education, nutrition and environmental management.
