First International Conference on
Traditional Medicine and HIV/AIDS
March 11-12, 1999   Dakar, Senegal


Conference Purpose: A meeting of traditional medicine organizations,
researchers, modern practitioners, policy makers, media and persons
living with HIV/AIDS to discuss the role of traditional medicine in
the global fight against AIDS.  Representatives of traditional
medicine organizations from 15 African countries, USA, Mexico and
Polynesia  will participate with recommendations being made to the
13th International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa July
2000.

Conference Sponsors: PRO.ME.TRA - The Association for the Promotion
of Traditional Medicine, an international NGO based in Dakar,
Senegal whose mission is to promote traditional medicine, conduct
research and develop ties with indigenous cultures throughout the
world. The Ministry of Scientific Research and Technology of the
Republic of Senegal, the Ford Foundation, DHHS Office of
International  & Refugee Health, The Embassy of France, and the
Global Health Council are co-sponsors of this international
conference.

The Republic of Senegal: There are  no visa or immunization
requirements for US citizens to enter Senegal.  A valid passport is
required.  The official language is French.  The conference will
have simultaneous
French-English-Wolof translation. The weather will be warm (70 - 80
F). Senegal is an Islamic country.
