PAHO Award for Administration 1999
-----------------------------------------------------------
Every year the Governments of the countries of the
Americas, acting through their representatives in the
meetings of the Governing Bodies of the Pan American Health
Organization, confer the PAHO Award for Administration in
recognition of an outstanding contribution in the field of
administration within the framework of national health
services.

The award consists of a diploma and the sum of US$5,000 and
will be conferred to the candidate who has contributed
significantly to strengthening health development through
practice, teaching, or research.  The names of candidates
are submitted by the Member Governments of PAHO through
their ministries of health.  Names of proposed candidates
together with supporting documentation must be received by
the Director of the Pan American Sanitary Bureau before
March 31, 1999 - awards received after April 3 will be held
in abeyence for consideration by the Award Committee the
following year.

The Award Committee will judge the relative merits of the
candidates with regard to the following:  Demonstrated
excellence in the management of health programs at the
national or local level; experience in teaching health
program administration that has infuenced health practice
nationally or internationally; sustained research
production that contributes to improving the delivery of
health programs and services.

Division/Program/Office: Health Promotion and Protection
(HPP) Mental Health (HPM)

Salary Information:  Basic Salary: $49,523 at single rate;
Post Adjustment: $9,607 at single rate

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  Education: An M.D. degree with
specialization in psychiatry and an MPH degree, or a Ph.D.
degree in psychology, mental health nursing, psychiatric
social work and an MPH degree.  Experience:  National:
Seven years of combined experience in the planning or
administration of care delivery in community-based mental
health programs or services.  International: Two years of
participation in programs and activities aimed at providing
international technical collaboration in the field of
mental health.  Languages: Very good knowledge of English
and Spanish.

Salary Information: Basic Salary: $49,523 at single rate;

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education: A postgraduate degree to
the Master's level in economics, law, public policy,
business administration, international relations, political
sciences, or in one of the health or social sciences.
Experience: Nine years of combined national and
international experience in external relations, resource
mobilization, fundraising, donor organizations, and the
design, review, implementation, and/or evaluation of health
projects.  Languages: Very good knowledge of English and
Spanish.  Knowledge of a third official language would be
an asset.
