BROKEN PEOPLE: Caste Violence Against India’s “Untouchables”

More than 160 million people in the “world's largest democracy” remain
at risk of systematic human rights violations on the basis of the caste
into which they are born. Despite the fact that India constitutionally
abolished the practice of “untouchability” in 1950, the practice
continues in the constitution's fiftieth year, and violence has become a
defining characteristic of the abuse. You can access this document
through the IDN Web Site.

Asian Development Outlook 1999

The Asian Development Outlook is the Asian Development Bank's annual
survey of economic development in its developing member countries in the
Asian and Pacific region. This year the Outlook features a special
chapter on the role of economic openness in promoting recovery and
growth in Asia. You can order this publication through the IDN
Bookstore, in affiliation with Amazon Books. All proceeds support the
operations if the IDN.

The Sphere Project

The IDN is proud to present feature stories on projects and NGOs from
around the world.

In July 1997, the Sphere Project was launched by an established group of
humanitarian agencies. This project sought to develop a set of standards
in core areas of humanitarian assistance in order to better the quality
of assistance provided to people affected by disasters, and to improve
the accountability of agencies.

The Project was undertaken out of concern that a massively increased
demand for humanitarian relief worldwide was in danger of outstripping
the response capacity of the humanitarian system and could lead to
inconsistent quality of relief efforts. You can find out more at the IDN
Web Site.
