The Future of American Medicine: Integrating Mind, Body, and Spirit will
present a broad range of spiritual health issues, with attention to all of its
complexity. It will provide an introduction to public health research on
religion and spirituality, provide healthcare practitioners and clergy with
guidance on dealing with this sensitive subject, and offer suggestions to
patients and others on making sound decisions about the spiritual route to
healing. Subjects to be discussed include certain religious and cultural
traditions, acupuncture, qigong, and their effects on the healing process, as
well as care of the dying.


WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Healthcare professionals such as physicians; nurses; physical therapists;
clinic, hospital, and nursing facilities' directors; psychologists; art
therapists; acupuncturists; massage therapists; nutritionists; human and
social services agency personnel; chiropractors; the medical community in
general; medical school administration and faculty; pre-med and graduate
students; medical researchers and interdisciplinary researchers; hospice
personnel; clergy, and the interested public.


SPEAKERS

- Hunter "Patch" Adams, M.D., the founder and director of the Gesundheit!
Institute, a nonprofit holistic healthcare community
- David Barnard, Ph.D., University Professor of Humanities and chairman of the
Department of Humanities at the Penn State College of Medicine at The Milton
S. Hershey Medical Center
- Harold Benjamin, Ph.D., founder and president of The Wellness Community, the
first community-based cancer support group in the United States
- Kenneth Cohen, M.A., an internationally renowned health educator, China
scholar, and qigong Master
- Dianne Connelly, Ph.D., M.Ac., M.A., a practitioner of traditional
acupuncture since 1973 and co-founder of the Traditional Acupuncture Institute
- Bruce Epperly, Ph.D., has served as the director of Protestant ministry and
senior Protestant chaplain, as well as adjunct professor of theology and
medicine at Georgetown University since 1982
- David Hufford, Ph.D.,  professor of medical humanities and director of the
Doctors Kienle Center for Humanistic Medicine
- David Larson, M.D., M.S.P.H., F.A.P.A., president of the National Institute
for Healthcare Research (NIHR)
- Rustum Roy, Ph.D., author of more than 600 papers with major contributions
to real science, is among the two or three active leading materials scientists
in the United States
- Susan Parenti, Ph.D., has received master and doctoral degrees in musical
composition from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
- Magdelena Villaronga, is the founder of Pro Arte Latino, whose purpose is to
expose Latino art and culture in Pennsylvania, and is a visual artist
