September Events Summary
Over a dozen people are taking part in a two-day-a-week fast this September
in solidarity with those forced to go hungry two days a week every month of
the year by Harris government cutbacks. All those fasting-and their
supporters-are invited to take part in vigils, educational events, and a
final procession and act of non-violent resistance October 1.

Wednesday, September 9, 10 am-12 noon. Vigil at Queen's Park

Thursday, September 10: 6 pm-6:45 pm, Vigil at Loblaws, St. Clair West
Subway (just east of Bathurst/St.Clair)

Wednesday, September 16, 10 am-12 noon. Vigil at Queen's Park

Monday, September 21, 12 Noon-1 pm, Rally to Drop Charges Against Santa,
Elves, Easter Bunny, Bunny Helpers, and Robin Hood and Honest Shawn,
Loblaws/Weston Headquarters, Weston Centre (St. Clair Ave. East, half block
east of Yonge)

Tuesday, September 22, 7:30 pm, When Macaroni Is Not Enough: An Evening on
Food Charity Versus Food Justice, Friends Meeting House, 60 Lowther (north
of St. George subway, off Bedford)

Wednesday, September 23, 9 am,. Courtroom L, Old City Hall, Trial of Easter
Bunny and Bunny Helpers, for handing out anti-hunger flyers at Loblaws

Thursday, September 24: 6 pm-6:45 pm, Vigil at Loblaws, St. Clair West
Subway (just east of Bathurst/St.Clair)

Wednesday, September 30, 10 am-12 noon. Vigil at Queen's Park

Thursday, October 1, 11 am, Procession of Remembrance...and Resistance.
Mark the third anniversary of the devastating 21.6% cut to social
assistance. Meet 11 am, Friends Meeting House, 60 Lowther, Walk to Queen's
Park for 12 Noon, Non-Violent Witness and Blood Pouring on the steps of the
legislature to remind legislators and all residents of Ontario that people
continue to die because of these cuts.




* Despite the best efforts of food banks, why are thousands of people in
Toronto suffering from "severe food deprivation"?
* Why are corporations like Loblaws profiting off of poverty and arresting
anti-hunger demonstrators in the middle of food drives?
* How can we end the cycle of charity-driven band-aid "solutions" and
achieve true food justice where no one is hungry or homeless?

* Recent research on severe food deprivation among Toronto's food bank users
* Corporate Hypocrite Pickets: The Myth of the Good Corporate Citizens
* The Food Not Bombs Experience: Challenging the violence of poverty and
militarism by distributing free food (one  U.S. FNB member was jailed for
28 days for serving free bagels )
* Community-based solutions which defy corporate control of food production
and distribution
* The fate of the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus and Robin Hood...

This event is part of a series of educational and pro-active events taking
place this September aimed at raising awareness of and promoting positive
action around ending the causes of hunger and homelessness in Ontario.
Other events include a two-day-a-week fast for the whole month and a
Procession of Remembrance October 1, the third anniversary of the 21.6%
welfare cuts in Ontario.
