Women's Health Speaker Series 2001
British Columbia Centre of Excellence for Women's Health

Consuming Identities
Young Women, Eating Disorders and the Media

Guest Speakers

Marie Hoskins, PhD. is a professor in Child and Youth Care at the University
of Victoria

Kristy Dellebuur is a graduate student in the department of Human and Social
Development at the University of Victoria

Jacqui Gingras MSc, RD, is a Registered Dietitian and nutrition therapist.
She is a co-facilitator of "What are You Hungry For?" support groups for
women struggling with issues around food, weight, and body image.

Karen Dias MA(cand), Dip C, is a clinical counsellor and co-facilitator of
"What are You Hungry For?" support groups for women.

Although eating disorders and body image disturbances are diagnosed in young
women at alarming rates, there is still a lack of knowledge about how and
why they occur. The speakers will share their understanding of the phenomena
of eating disorders and body image disturbances in terms of identity
construction during adolescence. Of special interest is the way in which
images in popular culture (especially media images) become internalized in
the self-concept of adolescent women. Join us for a discussion surveying
contemporary research pertaining to adolescent women, eating disorder
prevention, and the media.
