COMMUNITY DEVELOPER - 170 LEES AVENUE INITIATIVES
Part-time contract position: 2.5 days per week
9 month contract (with possibility of extension) June, 2001 to Feb., 2002
salary range $39,570 - $47,599 per annum, pro-rated to part time
The Sandy Hill Community Health Centre (SHCHC) has developed an exciting and innovative partnership to serve people living in the vicinity of 170 Lees Ave. The focus of this initiative is in the area of parental support and support to the newcomer community. SHCHC is looking for a community developer to work from the site at 170 Lees Ave. on a variety of projects including: development of parental support programs; outreach to tenants; linking families to community resources including recreation and employment; development of a tenants' program advisory committee; development of programming in areas such as Food Security and housing support. The candidate will be a member of the Community Health Promotion Team of the SHCHC, but will be working independently most of the time.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- developing an effective relationship with the tenants and building management
- developing and overseeing programming based on needs and capacities of tenants, often in collaboration with partner agencies
- facilitating communication and collaboration between partner agencies
- supporting the active participation of tenants in all aspects of program development, delivery and evaluation
- supervising volunteers, students, program staff as required
- collection of data for evaluation and other purposes
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- at least two years of post-secondary education and two years of community development experience
- Strong community development skills
- Strong group facilitation and coordination skills
- Strong networking skills
- Strong coordination and organizational skills
- Strong written and spoken English; proficiency in southern Asian languages (e.g. Bengali or Chinese) would be an asset
- Experience working with diverse populations
- Initiative, resourcefulness and problem-solving
- an ability to work independently
- Knowledge of computer programs, including WordPerfect
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to work flexible hours (including one evening/week and occasional weekend work)
