International Council of AIDS Service Organizations
(ICASO) Community Forum: How Issues in Human Rights
Drive the AIDS Epidemic

The International Council of AIDS Service Organizations (ICASO) will be hosting
their Annual General Meeting from June 14 to June 18, 1999.  Participants will
include:  APCASO, Shouket Ali (Pakistan) and Malu Quintos (Philippines);
AfriCASO,Moustapha Gueye and Bineta Diop (Senegal); LACCASO, Mabel Bianco and Ines
Maria Re (Argentina); EuroCASO-Florian Hubner and Deborah Glejser (Switzerland);
NACASO, Jacqueline Coleman (USA) and Sharon Baxter (Canada); David Patterson, ICASO
Representative to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations
(Switzerland).

These international leaders in the AIDS movement will have an opportunity to discuss
issues such  as: the release of the ICASO publication "Stories from the Frontlines"
and to discuss the human rights dimensions of HIV/AIDS; the characteristics of the
AIDS epidemic in their region; factors affecting regional responses to AIDS;
Canada's role in the global AIDS epidemic.

Canadian Public Health Nurse Receives Well-Deserved Recognition
--------------------------------------------------------
The Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) and the Canadian Public Health Association
(CPHA) applaud the selection of an outstanding Canadian nurse as the recipient of
the International Council of Nurses' (ICN) first International Achievement Award.
The honour bestowed upon Margaret Hilson is the result of a selection process that
considered nominations from around the world.

Margaret Hilson, current Director of International Programs with CPHA, has a long
and distinguished career as a leader in the development and management of strategies
to influence public health internationally and in Canada.  A public health nurse
with a Masters degree in Environmental studies, Ms. Hilson's career began in
community development with CUSO in Asia and Central America.  She joined CPHA in
1985.  According to CPHA's Chief Executive Officer, Gerald H. Dafoe, "Ms. Hilson is
responsible for creating and shaping CPHA's core international activity.  The
program she has developed has provided technical and financial assistance to
national public health associations in over 22 countries around the world.  Ms.
Hilson has also been at the heart of the development of CPHA's international efforts
in the areas of HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, environmental health and the fight
against tobacco products.

For CNA President Lynda Kushnir Pekrul, the selection of Margaret Hilson by the
International Congress of Nurses is a personal tribute to her contributions to
public health promotion and testimony to the fact that Canadian registered nurses
working in Canada and abroad are leaders in their fields.  "The career potential of
nurses today knows no boundaries, geographical or otherwise," says the Saskatchewan-
based Kushnir Pekrul.

Margaret Hilson will be presented with her award on June 29, 1999 in London, England
as part of ICN's centennial celebrations.

The Canadian Nurses Association is the professional voice of nursing in Canada.  It
is the federation of 11 provincial/territorial nursing associations representing
over 110,000 registered nurses.

Conseil international des ONG de lutte contre le sida
(ICASO) Forum Communautaire : Incidence des droits de la
personne sur l'epidemie de sida

Le Conseil international des ONG de lutte contre le sida (ICASO) tiendra son
assemblee annuelle du 14 au 18 juin 1999.

Des representants cles de l'Afrique, de l'Asie/Pacifique, d'Amerique latine et des
Caraibes, d'Europe et de l'Amerique du Nord y seront presents.  Ces chefs de file
internationaux du mouvement de lutte contre le sida auront l'occasion de discuter de
questions telles que :  la diffusion de la publication d'ICASO <Histoires des
premieres lignes> et les droits de la personne dans le contexte du VIH/sida; les
caracteristiques de l'epidemie de sida dans leur region; les facteurs ayant une
incidence sur les reponses regionales au sidal; et le role du Canada dans le cadre
de l'epidemie mondiale de sida.

Une infirmiere canadienne en sante publique recoit une
reconnaissance internationale bien meritee

L'Association des infirmieres et infirmiers du Canada (AIIC) et l'Association
canadienne de sante publique (ASCP) se rejouissent du choix d'une infirmiere
canadienne exceptionnelle comme laureate du premier Prix international pour
realisations particulierement remarquables decerne par le Conseil international des
infirmieres (CII).  L'honneur reserve a Margaret Hilson decoule d'un processus de
selection qui a porte sur des candidatures provenant du monde entier.

Margaret Hilson, l'actuelle directrice des Programmes internationaux a l'ACSP, a
fait une carriere longue et distinguee comme chef de file de l'elaboration et de la
gestion de strategies visant a orienter la sante publique sur la scene mondiale et
au Canada.

Infirmiere en sante publique detenant une maitrise en etudes environnementales, Mme
Hilson a commence sa carriere en developpement communautaire avec le SUCO en Asie et
en Amerique centrale.  Elle s'est jointe a l'ACSP en 1985.  Selon le directeur
general de l'ACSP, Gerald H. Dafoe, "Mme Hilson a cree et oriente le gros des
activites internationales de l'ACSP.  Le programme qu'elle a mis sur pied a fourni
une aide financiere et technique a des associations nationales de sante publique
dans plus de 22 pays.  Mme Hilson a aussi ete au coeur des efforts internationaux
deployees par l'ACSP dans les domaines du VIH/SIDA, de la sante genesique, de
l'hygiene du milieu et de la lutte contre les produits du tabac."

Pour la presidente de l'AIIC, Lynda Kushnir Pekrul, en choisissant Margaret Hilson,
le Conseil international des infirmieres rend un hommage a ses contributions a la
promotion de la sante publique et souligne le fait que les infirmieres autorisees
canadiennse qui travaillent au Canada et a l'etranger sont des chefs de file dans
leur domaine.  "Les possibilites de carriere des infirmieres d'aujourd'hui ne
connaissent aucune frontiere, geographique ou autre", affirme Mme Kushnir Pekrul,
qui vit en Saskatchewan.

Margaret Hilson recevra la distinction du CII le 29 juin 1999 a Londres, en
Angleterre, dans le cadre des celebrations du centenaire du CII.

L'AIIC est la porte-parole de la profession infirmiere au Canada.  L'AIIC est la
federation de 11 associations professionelles provinciales/territoriales
representant plus de 110,000 infirmieres autorisees.
