New Caribbean Plan to Prevent HIV/AIDS Launched

A new strategic plan to prevent and control AIDS throughout the Caribbean was
launched in Bridgetown Barbados February 14, 2001 by the Pan American Health
Organization and its Caribbean Epidemiology Center.  Nine of the 12 countries with
the highest infection rates in the Americas are in the Caribbean basin, and AIDS
has become a major cause of death among the 15-44 age group in several
countries.

Canada Increases Emergency Assistance to Earthquake Victims in El Salvador

Maria Minna, Canada's Minister for International Cooperation, announced that the
Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) will provide an additional $1
million in assistance to El Salvador following the February 13th earthquake.
"Canada continues to respond to the urgent needs of the people of El Salvador,"
Minister Minna said. "This is another example of Canada's ongoing commitment to
its partners in the Americas."

China, Argentina, Senegal and Zimbabwe Lead in Global Campaign Against
Epilepsy

Leading a global Campaign against epilepsy, China, Argentina, Senegal and
Zimbabwe are implementing projects to train doctors in diagnosing epilepsy and
providing treatment for this disease.  The World Health Organization (WHO)
announced these four "demonstration projects" at the launch of the second stage of
its Global Campaign against Epilepsy. The four country projects will serve as a
model for other WHO Member States.

Canadian Civil Society Consultation around the 'dot force' initiative

The goal of the consultation is to solicit opinions from and foster dialogue among
Canadian Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and the international development
community in Canada for input into the consultative process around the Digital
Opportunity Taskforce (dot force).  This initiative was launched by the G8 at its
Kyushu-Okinawa Summit Meeting in July 2000. The dot force is intended as a
vehicle for the G8 to develop concrete steps to help bridge the international digital

la suite du seisme du 13 fevrier, l'Agence canadienne de developpement
international (ACDI) ajoutera un million de dollars a l'aide qu'elle apporte au
Salvador.  "Le Canada continue de repondre aux besoins criants de la population
salvadorienne," a declare la ministre Minna.  "Les secours annonces illustrent
encore une fois l'engagement constant du Canada envers ses partenaires des
Ameriques."

A la pointe de la campagne mondiale contre l'epilepsie, la Chine, l'Argentine, le
Senegal et le Zimbabwe mettent en oeuvre des projets pour former les medecins au
diagnostic et au traitement de l'epilepsie.  L'Organisation mondiale de la Sante
(OMS) a fait l'annonce de ces quatre "projets de demonstration" pour le lancement
de la deuxieme phase de la Campagne mondiale contre l'epilepsie. Ces quatre
projets nationaux serviront de modele pour les autres Etats Membres de l'OMS.

Consultation de la Societe civile canadienne dans le cadre de l'initiative "dot force"

Cette consultation a pour but de solliciter des opinions de la part des organisations
de la Societe civile canadienne (OSC) et de la communaute du developpement
international du Canada, et d'encourager le dialogue entre elles, pour que le resultat
en soit pris en compte dans le processus de consultation du Groupe de travail sur
l'Opportunite numerique (Digital Opportunity Task force), egalement appele dot
force. Cette initiative a ete lancee par le G8 lors de son Sommet de Kyushu-
Okinawa en juillet 2000. La dot force est concue comme un moyen pour le G8 de
contribuer concretement a la reduction du fosse numerique international. Pour plus
