In ViewPoints this week, the IDN publishes a commentary by Dr. Larry
Grossman entitled "Protecting Chiquita, Destroying Windward Island
Economies: Uncle Sam is Going Bananas in Trade War with Europe". This
piece examines the social, gender, and economic impacts of the US
position on the Eastern Caribbean. On this same page, you can submit
your thoughts directly to the Corporate Affairs office of Chiquita.
Note from the editor: Four years ago, a consultant from Barbados told me
that in 10 years the Eastern Caribbean would become the "ghetto" of the
Americas. It is clear that what Chiquita and Clinton have done may well
lead to that promise. In St. Lucia alone, recent violent attacks (at
least one was robbery related) have left a young Canadian man dead and a
Priest seriously wounded as the poorer members of the community struggle
with what their future holds.
