DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH SCIENCES
WEDNESDAY, April 1st, 1998

1. Minutes of March 4, 1998
Dr. Skinner welcomed everyone to the meeting and asked if anyone had any
changes to the Minutes of the March 4th Meeting which were sent out by
E-mail. No one had any changes to make and the Minutes were moved to be
adopted and approved by Victor Marshall and seconded by Andrea
Sass-Kortsak.
2. Updates
Dr. Skinner introduced Dr. Ross Gray who is involved in cancer research at
the Toronto- Sunnybrook Regional Cancer Centre and who has also recently
been appointed as Assistant Professor in the Dept. Of PHS. Dr. Skinner
introduced another new appointment in the Department, Dr. Jennifer Payne
from the Institute of Work and Health, she has recently been appointed as
Lecturer in the department. And another addition to the Department is a
Visiting Professor - Dr. Guan-Yi Geng from China.
Dr. Skinner mentioned that there will be some discussion with regards to
the Search for Chair process at the end of the meeting.
The Student Support Task Group, Graduate Department of Community Health -
terms of reference are attached to the agenda. Dr. Andrea Sass-Kortsak
will chair this group and the membership will consist of 3 faculty members
and 3 students. The time frame is to set up a meeting by mid April and
report by August 15th. Faculty and students who are interested and would
like to be part of this group should speak to Andrea.
3. Cancer Prevention - Prof. Gail Eyssen, Dr. Richard Schabas
Prof. Gail Eyssen have a brief update on cancer research, prevention and
educational programs.
Dr. Richard Schabas, Head of the Division of Preventive Oncology at Cancer
Care Ontario discussed the research directions, priorities and
opportunities with regard to cancer prevention. Dr. Schabas presented
some overheads of changes in causes of deaths in Ontario from breast,
colorectal and stomach cancers over a 25 year period. Dr. Schabas
mentioned that cancer control involves primary prevention and screening.
Dr. Schabas gave some background on Cancer Care Ontario. This is a cancer
control agency with a broader mandate with 8 regional centres (these
centres plan and deliver cancer services over 8 regions). The Core
functions of CCO are surveillance, prevention, screening and research.
Cancer Care Ontario has many units which contribute to its mandate -
Surveillance Unit, Research Unit, Screening Unit and Prevention Unit.
4.Institute for Human Development, Life Course and Aging - Prof. Victor
Marshall
Prof. Marshall gave an update on the Institute regarding its research
directions, priorities and opportunities for collaboration with PHS. He
gave a brief history of the Institute. The Program in Gerontology began in
1979, it became the Centre for Studies in Aging in 1989 and the Institute
for Human Development, Life Course and Aging in 1996. The mandate is to
conduct basic, multidisciplinary research from a social science perspective
on human development, the life course and aging; and to support graduate
and postgraduate education in life course and aging. The Institute is a
multidisciplinary one with 58 members of the graduate faculty, 20 academic
units, only 4 faculties are not represented. Recent (1995-98) in-house
research - 16 projects and 9 contract total almost $800,000.00.
This is a multidisciplinary Institute that is linked to adult coping and
child development, linked to adult life course, older worker and retirement
transition experiences, survey instrument development - The Veterans
Affairs study and the "Secure Gardens" project. There is a collaborative
program in aging and human development, this was approved in 1998 (there

participating units plus the Institute). Course administration is through
Community Health. There is a doctoral, professional and scientific masters
levels, core course, elective, and thesis/practicum topic. The
constituencies of the Institute are: three areas - child human development
researchers, life course researchers and gerontologists. There are two
in-house affiliates : Connecting Seniors of Canada, and Ontario Network for
the Prevention of Elder Abuse. There are a dozen in-house graduate
students and one post-doc; half a dozen in-house senior researchers, a
visiting professor, short-term visitors and core and non-core staff. Some
in-house research areas include issues of an Aging Workforce, Options 45+
Surveys, income security and early retirement pathways, labour force exit
transitions and health, well-being in Canadian Survey of Health and Aging,
dispute resolution: sexual harassment in the workplace, use of alternative
healers, unmarried mothers and coping and evaluating a project to foster
mutual supports among the elderly.
5. HIV Social, Behavioural and Epidemiological Studies Unit - Profs. Ted
Myers and Liviana Calzavara
Dr. Skinner decided to move this agenda item to the next meeting on May
13th as there was not sufficient time available for this item due to the
fact that faculty wished to discuss the search process for the chair.
Profs. Myers agreed and this item will be on the agenda at the next meeting
- May 13, 1998.
6. Other: At 1:30 faculty discussed the search for chair process.
There was no other business to report at this time and the meeting was
adjourned at 2:00 p.m.
The next departmental meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 13, 1998
from
12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. in the Dean's Conference Room, Medical Science
Building.
