Carol et al:
I am working with Dr Virginia Gonzales at University of Washington (Seattle)
Center for Health Education and Research on a grant from AHCPR on this topic.
We are piloting a process for developing CLAMs--culturally and linguistically
appropriate materials-- from existing English documents. A hallmark of the
process is involvement of the intended learners in translation, testing and
revision. We have started with the premise that, while it is probably better
to produce original materials in the target language, this is usually not
feasible, and there are distinct advantages to consistency and equity in
information giving. We are hoping to define a reliable, affordable, replicable
process A brief progress report can be found at
http://www.PrenatalEd.com/newsv3n6.htm. If you are interested in seeing a
sceintific poster on the process and preliminary findings, let me know. If you
have Powerpoint I can email it to you as an attachment. SS
