There is also a good chapter in Volume 1, Children
and Youth, part of the National Forum on Health
Determinants of Health series. The chapter, "Youth,
Substance Abuse and Determinants of Health" by
Pam Fralick and Bryan Hyndman discusses the
connection between the determinants of health and
illicit drug use. The link with alcohol is much less
clear; for example, abuse of alcohol has been seen
to increase with income levels.

The WHO's 'Social Determinants of Health: The
Solid Facts' has a page on
addiction that commences 'Individuals turn to
alcohol, drugs and tobacco
and suffer from their use, but use is influenced by
the wider social
setting.'

It may or may not assist.

Subject: Socio-environmental approach to drug
use...

I have been asked for information about evidence
that social action/
advocacy/ policy have any effect on drug taking
behaviour. Can people
recommend
information specific to drugs? (as opposed to
health in general)

Thanks,

Dennis Raphael
