Slow Speed Modem Pool Replacement

Due to a phone switch replacement, the slow speed modem pool service at
736-5258 will be discontinued this summer. In its place, CCS Network
Operations has created a new pool that supports 300-2400 bps dial-up at
736-6230. Both the 5258 and 6230 services will be in operation until
mid-August. At 0300 hours on August 17th the 5258 service will be shut
down and slow speed dialup will then be provided only at 736-6230. After
August 17th, users with modem speakers dialing 736-5258 will hear a
message about this change.

The new pool provides the same operating environment as the original
736-5258 service. This includes:

 300-2400 bps support only
 no high-speed modem account required
 no PPP/SLIP/ARAP support
 no direct internet access
users must turn off error-correction on their modems prior to dialing

New features are:

30 minute idle job-killer (no data transfer for 30 minutes)
5 minute idle-exec killer (no response to terminal server prompt)
 simplified dial-up procedure

Simplified dialup

A simplified dialup procedure is made possible by the fact that the
modems in this pool are directly connected to terminal servers. The
procedure is as follows:

1. Leave your modem settings the same as used for 736-5258.
2. Dial (416) 736-6230.
3. Wait 5 seconds after you receive a 'connect'.
4. Press <ENTER> until terminal server responds.
5. Telnet to the desired host.
6. When session is completed, logout from the host.
7. Enter <EXIT> at the terminal server prompt and the modem will hang
up.
