Alleyne recognized with Archon Award for world health
leadership

Sir George Alleyne, a physician serving his second term
as director of the Pan American Health Organization
(PAHO), has received the prestigious Archon Award from
Sigma Theta Tau International, honor society of nursing.
"Alleyne is one of four recipients of the award, given
in recognition of exceptional leadership in promoting
health and welfare throughout the world," said the
nursing group, which presented the award to Dr. Alleyne
in London.
The international nursing society said Dr. Alleyne's
"personal commitment and leadership have helped empower
individuals and communities in the Americas to take
responsibility for their own health. He has created new
partnerships to prioritize health issues, recognizing
linkages between health, environment and development."
Sigma Theta Tau International is a 76-year-old, quarter
million-member honor society. Its mission is to improve
the health of people worldwide by improving nursing
scholarship. Members include practicing nurses,
instructors, researchers, policymakers, entrepreneurs
and others.
The award said "Alleyne's leadership at PAHO has been
characterized by kindness, urbanity, accessibility,
empathy and professionalism" and noted that "In 1990,
he was made Knight Bachelor by Her Majesty Queen
Elizabeth II for his services to health care."
The Archon Awards--from the Greek word meaning "first to
lead"--are granted biennially by Sigma Theta Tau
International, Honor Society of Nursing, to individuals
who have shown exceptional leadership in promoting
health and welfare throughout the world. "Regardless of
their profession, these individuals have made health a
major aspect of their lives, and through their efforts
have created significant change that is far-reaching in
scope. Through all of their endeavors, they embody the
Sigma Theta Tau values of scholarship, caring,
compassion, benevolence, humility integrity and
intellectual rigor,"the society said. Past recipients of
the Archon Awards have included Drs.Jonas Salk, C.
Everett Koop, Marian Wright Edelman and David Hamburg
Other recipients of the Archon Award this year are: Dr.
Daniel Callahan, United States, ethicist and co-founder
and past president of The Hastings Center, the
international center for education and research in
health care ethics; Aziza Hussein, Egypt, chair of the
Egyptian National NGO Commission for Population and
Development, and past president of the International
Planned Parenthood Federation and Dame Cicely Saunders,
United Kingdom, nurse, social worker and physician;
founder and chair of the board of St. Christopher's
Hospice, and founder of the worldwide hospice care
movement.
The Pan American Health Organization, which also serves
as the Regional office for the Americas of the World
Health Organization, works to improve health and raise
living standards in all the countries of the Americas.
