PAHO has stated that Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS "is one
of the most prominent and important events occurring at this time
globally." There are more than 250 suspected cases in Canada, where 10
people have died, and the United States is investigating 166 cases from
30 states. No cases have been confirmed in Latin America or the
Caribbean, though Brazil is investigating two possible cases. Worldwide,
2,781 cases of SARS and 111 deaths have been reported from 17 countries
on three continents. Representatives from the World Health Organization
have said that SARS "appears to be the first severe and easily
transmissible new disease to emerge in the 21st century." For the full

OBESITY IN COSTA RICAN CHILDREN

A new study on the prevalence of obesity and overweight in Costa Rican
schoolchildren shows that the current situation is “alarming” and that
the future health burden attributable to excess weight gain “is likely
to be huge,” if the current trend continues. The study, the first of its
kind in this country, is presented in the January 2003 issue of PAHO's
Pan American Journal of Public Health. The article is available online
