WHO EXTENDS SARS-RELATED TRAVEL ADVICE
WHO is now recommending that persons planning to travel to Beijing and
Shanxi Province, China, and to Toronto, Canada, consider postponing all
but essential travel to these destinations. This temporary
recommendation is an extension of travel advice issued for Guangdong
Province and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China on April 2,
and will be reassessed in three weeks time. For more information,

CHINA: WHO TEAM TO INVESTIGATE SARS OUTBREAK IN SHANGHAI
An expert team from the World Health Organization (WHO) has arrived in
Shanghai to investigate an outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory
Syndrome (SARS) as the Chinese leadership strengthens its commitment to
openly report cases of the disease. WHO said the removal from their
Communist Party posts of the Health Minister and the Mayor of Beijing,
both of whom downplayed the seriousness of SARS, is an indication that
the Chinese leadership is now taking seriously the need for transparency

UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA SYMPOSIUM ON POVERTY AND THE 10/90 GAP
The University of Ottawa will be hosting a "Symposium on Poverty and the
10/90 GAP." The symposium will explore the effects of poverty and the
imbalance in wealth distribution (10 % of the World Population consumes
90 % of World Resources) on population health. The speakers will be Dr.
Solly Benatar, President, International Association of Bioethics, and
Dr. Peter Tugwell, Director, Centre for Global Health at the University
of Ottawa. The Symposium will be held at the University of Ottawa,
Tabaret Hall, Room 070 on Friday April 25, 2003, from 16h00 to 18h00.

CANADA MAKES MAJOR CONTRIBUTION TO HEALTH, BASIC EDUCATION AND
AGRICULTURE IN MALI
Minister of International Cooperation Susan Whelan has announced a major
funding commitment of $54.6 million for health, education and
agriculture initiatives in Mali. Mali is one of nine countries of focus
selected by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). An
allocation of $14 million is for health care: $7 million will be used to
support health services focusing on reproductive health at the community
level and to supply equipment and materials, and the remaining $7
million will be used to train paramedics to improve the quality of

UK-CANADIAN CONSORTIUM COMMITS $95 MILLION TO THE LARGEST INTERNATIONAL
HEALTH RESEARCH PROJECT EVER FUNDED IN CANADA
Unravelling the structure of hundreds of human proteins will be the goal
of an ambitious $95 million partnership that brings together British and
Canadian health researchers under the direction of an internationally
renowned Canadian scientist. The newly formed Structural Genomics
Consortium (SGC) is a three-year initiative led by Canadian scientist
Dr. Aled Edwards, a world-leading expert in proteomics and structural
genomics research and a University of Toronto professor at the Banting
