ELECTION TO CSIH BOARD OF DIRECTORS: 2005-2007

Every two years the Canadian Society for International Health holds
elections for members of the Society to serve on the Board of Directors.
This is an exciting opportunity to become involved in providing
leadership and overall direction to the society. Board members need to
be dedicated to international health and development and have the time
to attend at least four Board meetings a year [some by teleconference],
and to sit on the society's various sub committees.

Persons interested should be prepared to serve on the Board for a
two-year term. The Society covers all expenses related to participation
in Board meetings.

Board members are responsible for:

            • establishing policies and strategic directions
for the Society;

            •           safeguarding the Society's assets;

            • serving as a contact with the membership of the
Society;

            • representing the Society to policy makers and
others interested in international                         health;

            • participating in, and chair when necessary,
committees of the Society;

            • assisting in the recruitment and retention of
members;

            • participating in all Board meetings up to 4 per
year, of which two may be face to face, and the others by teleconference

The call for nominations and nomination forms for the Board elections
can be accessed on the CSIH website at www.csih.org. All nominees and
their nominators must be members in good standing of CSIH. Deadline for
receiving completed nomination forms is 5:00 p.m. EDT, Monday, October
10th, 2005. Faxed or e-mailed forms will be accepted.

International Volunteer Posting

Exhibit a passion for sport and belief in the power of Sport for
Development. Right To Play volunteers advance our commitment to Sport
for Development, which evolved out of the evidence that strengthening
the right of children to play enhances holistic child development and
builds stronger communities. While volunteers do not need to be elite
athletes, they do need to demonstrate a love of sport, have personal
experience in sport and recreation and believe in the best values of
sport.

University of Ottawa: Leader in organizing national tsunami forum

More than 60 experts on tsunami disaster research, relief and
reconstruction met on April 22, 2005 for a unique forum organized by the
University of Ottawa, together with the Ocean Management Research
Network and the Canadian Society for International Health. The National
Tsunami Forum brought together experts from a broad cross-section of
fields, including health, engineering, government and aid agencies, to
discuss how research can help tsunami-affected countries with long-term
recovery.

A major theme that emerged at the conference was the gender-specific
impacts of the disaster. While statistics are few, the consensus is
that, in most areas, many more women and children died in the tsunami
than men, often because they were on the beach collecting fish while men
were in fishing boats at sea that could ride out the waves. Carol
Amaratunga, conference organizer and Research Chair, Women's Health
Research at the Institute for Population Health, says she couldn't be
more pleased with the outcome of the day-long event.

Amaratunga was in Sri Lanka with a CIHR project shortly before the
tsunami struck the island. She says, "The tsunami was a disaster of epic
proportions. We will never know the total number of people who lost
their lives. However there is an opportunity for the Canadian and
international research and development community to come together, to
pool expertise and knowledge, and to participate actively in the
recovery process. This is above all, the right thing for us to do."
