1997 WUSC International Seminar to Peru
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thirty university and college students along with three faculty
advisors
will be selected from across Canada to participate in the 50th World
University Service of Canada (WUSC) International Seminar which will
be
held in Peru from May 20 to June 30, 1997.

The summer program provides a first-hand introduction to various
aspects
of international development. It begins in May 1997 with an
orientation
and continues for six weeks of group visits and individual research in

Peru. The working languages of the Seminar will be English and
Spanish
and selected students must prepare written reports on their individual

research in English. Students will be required to raise a portion of
the
program costs ($2,700), with the remainder provided by the Canadian
International Development Agency (CIDA) and WUSC.

The deadline for student applications to WUSC Local Committees is
November 1, 1996. On campuses where no WUSC Local Committee exists,
the
deadline is November 1, 1996 to WUSC-Ottawa. As well, the deadline
for
faculty advisors applications to WUSC-Ottawa is November 1, 1996.

Information and application forms may be obtained from the WUSC Local

Population and Development Committee of the Federation of Canadian
Demographers
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The objectives of the Committee are to support the Canadian follow-up
to
the 1994 Cairo International Conference on Population and Development,

and to increase the involvement of the Canadian demographic community
in
matters of population and development.

It is developing a distribution list that seeks to include various
parties associated with questions of population and development,
starting
with interested members of the Canadian Population Society and the
Association des Demographes du Quebec, but also including other
persons
working on matters of population and development who are not members
of
CPS nor ADQ, as well as Canadian ex-patriots and persons who have
studied
in Canada. This distribution list of over 100 people provides a
network
for interaction among persons interested in population and development

who have, or who have had, a Canadian base. Interested persons are
also
encouraged to complete the form entitled "International Health Human
Resources Registry" of the Canadian Society for International Health.

The Committee also seeks to support activities in population and
development, especially at External Affairs and at the Canadian
International Development Agency. It is organizing a workshop on
"Canadian involvement in population and development" to be held in
Ottawa on 8-9 November 1996, just before the Canadian Society for
International Health "Third Canadian Conference on International
Health".
