Pan American Health Organization - Vacancy Notice

Post Title: Advisor on Communicable Diseases; Level: P.4; Post Number:
4.0811; Duty Station: Washington, D.C.; Tenure: Two years, first year
probationary period; Division/Program/Office: Division of Disease
Prevention and Control (HCP) Communicable Diseases Program (HCT).

Basic Salary: $48,019 at single rate; $51,597 with primary       dependents (per
annum net of taxes). Post Adjustment: $11,092 at single rate; $11,919 with
primary dependents (per annum net of taxes).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education:  A university degree in a health related profession and a
Master's degree in epidemiology or public health. An M.D. or a postgraduate
degree in a health related profession would be an asset.

Experience at national level:  Seven years of experience with progressively
greater responsibilities in the administration of prevention and control
programs on communicable diseases, including program organization,
management, supervision and implementation, academic and clinical
experience in infectious and parasitic diseases, as well as experience in
the development of human resources at all levels in disease prevention and
control.

Experience at international level:  Two years of participation in technical
cooperation programs and activities for the development of communicable
disease prevention and control programs in countries of the region.

Languages:  Very good knowledge of English or Spanish, with a working
knowledge of the other.

Maternal and Infant Survival Project (India). Requirements: experience with
health care service delivery in developing countries; experience in
management of a team of health professionals; experience in reporting and
liaison with donors and government officials; knowledge of maternal and
infant health; previous overseas/development experience. Familiarity with
monetization an asset but not essential. Tenure: two years. Very good base

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the WHO Special
Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) have issued
the call for entries for the 1997 IDRC/TDR award on Gender and Tropical
Diseases. The award is presented to the author(s) of the best original
paper on the topic "Gender Issues in the Operationalization of Bednet Use."
Winners of the CDN$5,000.00 award will be announced in November 1997.

Colombia hosts world congress on international health issues
------------------------------------------------------------------
Cartagena, Colombia will host the Fourth World Congress on Action Research,
Action Learning, and Process Management, and the Eighth on Participatory
Action-Research; Convergence in Knowledge, Space and Time. This Congress,
to be held from June 1-5, 1997, will provide a framework for partnership
among countries and for individual participation in dealing with pressing
world problems which affect equally the North and the South, including
poverty, hunger, forced migration, drugs, pollution, racism and ethnocide.

Columbia University offers elective in Urban Medicine and Immigrant Health
Care
------------------------------------------------------------------
The Center for the Study of Society and Medicine at the Columbia College of
Physicians and Surgeons is offering fourth-year medical students a new
one-month elective in Urban Medicine and Immigrant Health Care entitled
"Immigrant Health Care and Care Near the End of Life." Students rotate
through ambulatory care clinics and medical outreach programs located on
the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The elective is offered in either
February or March 1998, and in either February or March 1999. Students must
submit their applications no later than August 30, 1997. Enrollment is
