Title: Deputy Executive Director; Location: Ottawa, Ontario;
Classification: Management ($58,874 - $62,572 to start); Language
Requirements: English, French; Starting Date: September 1999;
Relocation Support: travel expenses for employee and dependents plus
moving, settling-in and lease/mortgage expenses; Closing Date:

This position is a full time permanent management position.  The
competition is open internally and externally.  Applications of
internal candidates will be fully processed before those of external
candidates are considered.

Requirements: The ideal candidate will have: 8 years experience in
the management & administration of programs, finances & human
resources; effective communication skills (listening, oral and
written); strong interpersonal skills; tact, diplomacy and
discretion in working with all CUSO constituencies, e.g. volunteer
Board members, partners, managers and staff, and CUSO membership;
ability to research, analyse and synthesize a large volume of
information; good computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets,
etc.); previous experience in the non-profit, voluntary sector;
sound knowledge and understanding of global development issues;
general knowledge of CUSO and its structures, and of CIDA, DFAIT,
the NGO community in Canada, and major European NGOs; ability to
practise participatory management style; commitment to gender and
racial equity; ability to work in a team and under pressure;
oral and written fluency in English and French; willingness and
ability to work evenings and weekends from time to time; ability to
travel in Canada and overseas.  Desirable: verbal and written
fluency in Spanish; overseas experience in one or more of CUSO's
Regions.

Measuring up: a health surveillance update on Canadian
children and youth
--------------------------------------------------------
The aim of this report from the Laboratory Centre for Disease
Control (LCDC), Health Canada is to highlight the surveillance of a
limited number of important health outcomes of Canadian children and
youth. The information in this report is the product of various
national surveillance programs of LCDC, Health Protection Branch,
Health Canada.

This surveillance update is presented according to the following
categories: infant health, childhood cancer, vaccine-preventable
diseases, respiratory health, child injury, and HIV and sexual
health. Each section presents an overview of the topic, followed by
the key surveillance indicators that demonstrate its impact on the
overall health of Canadian children and youth. Careful
interpretation of the most recent available data, as well as a
discussion of data limitations, accompanies each indicator. In
addition to trends over time, where possible, international
comparisons are highlighted. Finally, future developments in
national child health surveillance by LCDC are presented.  The

semaine; Connaissance generale de CUSO et de ses structures, de

A la hauteur: Une mise a jour de la surveillance de la
sante des jeunes du Canada
--------------------------------------------------------
Les auteurs du present rapport du Laboratoire de lutte contre la
maladie (LLCM), Sante Canada,  visent a mettre en lumiere la
surveillance d'un nombre limite d'importants parametres de la sante
chez les enfants et les jeunes du Canada. L'information contenue
dans ce rapport provient de divers programmes de surveillance
nationaux du LLCM, Direction generale de la protection de la sante,
Sante Canada.

Cette mise a jour est presentee en differentes categories : la sante
infantile, le cancer chez l'enfant, les maladies pouvant etre
prevenues par la vaccination, la sante respiratoire, les blessures
chez les enfants, ainsi que le VIH et la sante sexuelle. Chaque
section donne un apercu du sujet, suivi des indicateurs de
surveillance cles servant a determiner son impact sur la sante
generale des enfants et des jeunes du Canada. Une interpretation
prudente des plus recentes donnees disponibles, ainsi qu'une analyse
des limites de ces donnees accompagnent chaque indicateur. En plus
des tendances dans le temps, on a aussi presente, lorsque c'etait
possible, des comparaisons internationales. Enfin, on a signale des
changements a venir dans la surveillance nationale, par le LLCM, de
