Today there has been some spirited discussion on an important issue -
campaigns that blame women/mothers for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, without
addressing the 'determinants' of FAS, the social-environmental context for
the mother and additional factors. Christine Marton raised this significant
concern, with Tom Batstone replying before Christine's message had even made
it into some of our email boxes or into the Click4HP Archives. The
contributions of Alana LaPerle and Adeline Falk have been very helpful - and
I hope they will provoke more discussion and suggestions.
However - the subject line is very misleading - anyone looking at the
Click4HP Archives or receiving their daily Digest, will think that the issue
is OHPE #113. As an editor and contributor to the weekly Ontario Health
Promotion Email Bulletin (OHPE) , I think that neglecting to put the name of
the issue in the Subject line, does a disservice to the OHPE Bulletin. We
carried an announcement about the International FAS Day that had been
submitted to the OHPE Bulletin for consideration as an event.
For the 400+ international subscribers to the CLICK4HP Health Promotion
list-serv who do not receive the OHPE Bulletin, there is a copy of the table
of contents of the most recent issue, and a copy of the announcement under
discussion, below.
Indeed, the feature article in last Friday's OHPE Bulletin #113, focused on
the combination of community mobilization and health
communication/social-marketing in campaigns - something that is central to
this discussion of FAS.
Please try to use the subject line in your messages to reflect the issue
that follows - it becomes a headline, and should not be misleading, but tell
the reader what important issue is being addressed.
I look forward to more discussion on FAS Prevention

1) International Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Day September 9, 1999
International FAS Day 1999 9/9 9:09
In one magic minute, we can change the world!
Our goal is that in each time zone, at 9:09 a.m., this last September in the
old Millennium, people stop for a Minute of Reflection about the invisible
plague called Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. We would like school children, parents
at home, people at work, and radio and TV stations to take one minute to
remember that during the nine months of pregnancy, or while breastfeeding or
planning to conceive, a woman should not consume alcohol.
In this minute, we want the world to remember that approximately 66 million
people throughout the world are living with brains that were damaged by
alcohol, before they were born.
