Good Morning
I have received requests for clarification of how we in Alberta define
"population health". I do not speak for the province of Alberta but I can
share the description used to define the target audiences of Health In
Action. For the purposes of this project, we have separated health
promotion and injury prevention from population health in order to more
clearly define target audiences.
Target audiences are described as health promotion and injury prevention
practitioners that are directly involved in the development and/or
implementation of programs/reseach intended to improve the health of
communities or particular groups. We know from previous discussions on this
listserve that this group is diverse in approaches used and this is
consistent with practitioners in Alberta.
Population health practitioners broaden the target audience to include
those working in areas identified within the determinants of health such as
education, income, and social support. Policy makers and resource
allocators are included as a target audience in as much as they must see the
value of the Internet and other sources of knowledge and support for their
staff if practitioners are to have access to them.
Practitioners is the term that we have used to identify a variety of people,
working for pay or not, in communities and institutions toward better health
in their communitiies.
I hope this helps in your thinking about how population health will be
structured and practiced in the future.
I look forward to your responses.
