Title: Technical Officer (Terminologist/Editor); Grade: P.4; Official
Station: Alexandria (Egypt); Organizational Location/Unit: Regional Office
for the Eastern Mediterranean(EMRO) Division of Health Services Development
(DHS).
The objectives of the Programme are to promote the teaching of medical and
paramedical education and to encourage the preparation and publication of
textbooks, in the national languages.
Qualifications Required: Education and Skills: University degree in
medicine or other health-related field, with postgraduate studies in a
health-related field. University degree in literature would be an asset.
Extensive knowledge of health-related terminology and strong skills in
developing health-related terms in the principal national language of the
Region (Arabic). Experience: Extensive national/international experience
(at least 10 years) in developing health-related terminology as well as
teaching and learning materials in at least one of the national languages of
the Region. Authorship of materials in health-related terminology and/or
medical and health subjects in national languages of the Region would be an
asset. Languages: Excellent knowledge of spoken and written Arabic as well
as English or French. Working knowledge of other national languages would
be an asset.
Annual Salary (net of tax): US$ 48 019 at single rate and US$ 51 597 with
primary dependants. Post Adjustment: 29.6% of the above figures. This
percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each
month either upwards or downwards.

Environmental Sciences Department of the Natural Resources Institute

The Environmental Sciences Department of the Natural Resources Institute,
University of Greenwich (UK), is seeking a research student to assist the
investigation and development of approaches using remote sensing data and
GIS tools for the identification and monitoring of habitat and habitat
changes linked to various disease (human or animal) vectors and/or pests,
for forecasting and applications in the developing world.
The successful candidate is likely to have experience (but not
necessarily main background) in remote sensing and time series analysis,
and to have strong interest in real applications. He/she will be an
innovative and enthusiastic researcher, motivated by the challenge of
working as part of an interdisciplinary research team.
The studentship will be effective as soon as an appropriate candidate is
found, and for a period of 3 years. The grant is tax free 7,000 British
Sterling.

Development and Peace, the Canadian Catholic Church's organization for
international development, which supports projects in 40 countries in
the South and conducts education and fundraising programs in Canada, is
seeking, for its Toronto office, candidates for the position of: Permanent
Part-Time Secretary-Receptionist. General duties: You will report to the
Fundraising Coordinator. You will greet visitors, receive and direct phone
calls, electronic and postal mail, and perform general secretarial tasks.
Qualifications: College degree in Office Systems Technology or the
equivalent. Three (3) years of relevant experience. Aptitude for team
work. Good knowledge of computers and command of the appropriate programs.

Call for Abstracts: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Public Health
Announces its Third National Conference
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 1998 GIS in Public Health conference will be held August 17-20 in San
Diego, California. All sessions will be held at the Town and Country Resort
and Conference Center. The conference is sponsored by the Agency for Toxic
Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) with institutional cosponsors
including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Bureau of
the Census, US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the US Geological
Survey (USGS), American Public Health Association (APHA) and the National
Association of County and City Health Officials (NAACHO).
GIS in Health Workshops are also being planned for the day before the
conference starts (Monday, August 17, 1998). Two all-day sessions will
provide an introduction to the use of GIS in the health sciences, and an
opportunity to learn more about spatial statistics with health data. More
information will become available in the Conference Registration brochure,
to be published in early 1998.
Abstracts for the 1998 GIS in Public Health Conference must be received by
April 1, 1998.
