On Thursday, May 2nd, Karyn Pomerantz wrote in her sign in/introduction that
she will be doing a presentation at APHA on advocacy on the Internet, and
was seeking some suggestions.
There are many resources on activism and advocacy available over the
Internet, but few that identify as being public health or health promotion
focused.
I always start with our Canadian internet networks on social change and
advocacy. In particular NirvCentre's Web Networks: Community Resource
Centre, an Internet-based gathering place and information hub geared
specifically to the needs of people and organizations working to make a
difference in the world. It's also the gateway to all the dynamic
communities and unique services that make up Web Networks. These networks
and on-line conferences include ACT.CUTS.ONT, a very active advocacy
conference, which helps people from all across Ontario to share strategies,
encourage analysis, and discuss options for the future. This site provides
information on how to join the list, a searchable archive of past postings,
and a list of 'stop the cuts' links.

Here are a few other URLs to check out:
HandsNet: HandsNet is a national (U.S.), nonprofit organization that
promotes information sharing, cross-sector collaboration and advocacy among
individuals and organizations working on a broad range of public interest
issues.

or go directly to IGC: The Institute for Global Communications with its
Progressive Directory-- the WWW home of the IGC Networks and a gateway to
environmental and progressive resources worldwide. Enter through one of
IGC's five networks: PeaceNet; EcoNet; ConflictNet; LaborNet;
WomensNet

The Canadian version of IGC is WEB Networks as above: http://www.web.apc.org
Adam Rifkin's Activism Links - very comprehensive links to activist
organizations around the world, non-profit groups and resources plus
readings, issues, discussion groups on democracry and more, technology and
community, and the U.S. government.

Empower Web - This is a major Web site by and about non-profit
organizations, researching and funding, how to write letters of intent and
grant proposals, working with volunteers, various forms of direct mail and
tele-fundraising efforts and publications, networking with other non-profits
and much more.

Women'space on the Web is a [print and electronic] newsletter by, for and
about women, based in Nova Scotia, Canada. We aim to further the equality of
women, and work to prevent discrimination on grounds of race, class,
national status, disability, age and sexual orientation. Women'space was
born out of a need to develop understanding and use of cyberspace as a
powerful tool for women's activism. In the April/May '96 newsletter there is
an excellent article on what women activists do on-line and how they do
advocacy and take action.

That's quite a few places to look at activism on-line. Do other people have
suggestions on Advocacy and the Internet in relation to health promotion?
