Health Statistics from the Americas (1998 Edition)
This edition is the fourth in a series begun in 1991 to complement the
quadrennial publication "Health in the Americas." Making a first for
the series, Part I of this edition is devoted to a special topic -
health during childhood.

Part I deals with selected demographic aspects, presents estimated
death rates for broad groups of causes for children under 1 year and
children 1-4 years of age, and examines selected health topics of
particular importance during childhood.

Part II presents data on registered mortality in specific age groups.
In addition to providing a summarized presentation of causes of death
in children under 5 years of age, it also includes mortality data for
several age groups immediately following early childhood. These data
have not been published previously in this age detail, and they should
be invaluable in the study of adolescent health.

In Part III, as in previous editions, this volume presents summarized
mortality data by age group and sex for all country-years received
after the previous edition (1995).

With this book, PAHO once more brings to analysts, researchers, policy
makers, and other interested parties, the full richness of statistical
information about health available in the Region of the Americas. 1999
ISBN 92 75 11567 2 Also available on CD-ROM. (CD-ROM includes the
latest editions of "Health in the Americas" and "Health Statistics
from the Americas" plus the previous edition of "Health Conditions in
the Americas/Health Statistics from the Americas.)

Health in the Americas: 1998 Edition, Vol I and II
"Health in the Americas," formerly called "Health Conditions in the
Americas, is the authoritative encyclopedia of health indicators and
trends in the Region. Published every four years by PAHO, this two-
volume reference offers an exhaustive analysis of the health situation
in the entire Region of the Americas.

Volume I explores the Region's health situation in five chapters.
This regional analysis examines public health trends, the health
status of various population groups, major diseases and health
problems, the health sector's response to these conditions, and the
status of external technical and financial cooperation destined to
health. Volume II presents the most current data on the Region's 45
countries and territories, from the perspective of each country's
socioeconomic and demographic context, and sketches their health
prospects for the immediate future.

This latest edition of "Health in the Americas," as did its
predecessors, fulfills PAHO's mandate to inform its Member Governments
about health conditions and trends in the Region. This compendium is
also a practial tool for a broad range of professionals and students
from epidemiologists to social researchers and government workers to
journalists. A must-have reference for medical and public health
libraries everywhere, "Health in the Americas" should meet the needs
of everyone interested in obtaining the most complete and accurate
data on health in the Americas. ISBN 92 75 11569 9 Also available on
CD-ROM. (CD-ROM includes the latest editions of "Health in the
Americas" and "Health Statistics from the Americas" plus the previous
edition of "Health Conditions in the Americas/Health Statistics from
the Americas.)

Measles Eradication Field Guide
In 1994, the Ministers of the Americas adopted the goal of eradicating
measles from the Western Hemisphere by the year 2000. Although the
countries have made considerable progress toward this goal, scattered
outbreaks continue to occur. It is essential that the countries
maintain high immunization levels within their populations, especially
in light of the threat of reintroduction of measles from other regions
of the world.

To help the countries of the Americas become and remain measles-free,
PAHO has developed a vaccination strategy for outbreak prevention and
measles eradication. This publication outlines that strategy and also
provides valuable background information about measles in a concise
format and easy-to-understand language. Its seven chapters cover such
subjects as the epidemiology of measles, clinical aspects of the
disease, proper handling and delivery of measles vaccines, and methods
of laboratory confirmation of measles infection. The rationale and
activities related to the vaccination strategy are explained in depth.
The largest section of the book is devoted to surveillance for measles
cases and gives guidelines for case investigation, outbreak response,
and other omponents of an effective surveillance system. Attached as
appendices are numerous examples of forms that can be copied and
modified as needed for local surveillance purposes. There is also an
extensive bibliography arranged by subject.

The practical information contained in this manual will benefit public
health personnel and medical practitioners at all levels. The field
guide is an essential tool for anyone involved in administering or
carrying out vaccination programs, both in the Americas and elsewhere.
